An alternate ending to be included in the Breaking Bad: The Complete Series box set — which will not be released until November 26 — was leaked online last night.
The ending features Bryan Cranston, who played “Walter White” on Breaking Bad, in bed with Jane Kaczmarek, who played Cranston’s wife on FOX’s Malcolm in the Middle from 2000-2006.
The scene consists of Cranston’s Malcolm in the Middle character, “Hal,” waking up from a dream in which the final season of Breaking Bad was recapitulated. He prods Kaczmarek’s “Lois” awake, and recounts his experiences living as “Walter White.” She dismisses the dream as indigestion, but as the lights dim and the camera pans right, a distinctive black hat can be seen sitting on a reading chair.
The alternative ending is a knowing nod to theories that Breaking Bad is a sequel to Malcolm in the Middle in which “Hal” is “Walter” after he’s entered the witness protection program. The actual ending of Breaking Bad makes this theory highly unlikely.
Kaczmarek was widely reported to have been on the set of Breaking Bad in January, fueling speculation that she would be filming an outtake with Cranston.
