The body of a recently-retired district attorney from Newton County, Texas, was found Friday evening about 150 miles away near Shreveport, La., dead from a gunshot wound according to a preliminary autopsy report.
Police in Caddo Parish have the death of Robert Choate under investigation, but do not believe foul play was involved according to the Beaumont Enterprise.
Choate’s body was found in Louisiana, about 150 miles north of Beaumont, Tex, near a vacant building off U.S. 171 by the building’s owner.
Texas Governor Rick Perry appointed Choate from private practice to district attorney for Newton County in 2010. He was a former section supervisor of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and past assistant district attorney of Newton County. Choate resigned from the post on Oct. 2 and served his last official day on Oct. 31, following allegations of misconduct, according to Jasper, Tex., radio station KJAS.
