Church of England backs women bishops in principle

The Church of England’s national assembly on Wednesday gave strong backing to the principle of allowing women to serve as bishops.

The General Synod voted 378 to eight in favour of the move, clearing the way for a possible vote next year which could bring the measure into Church legislation.
