A Michigan woman is dead after a man attempted to kill himself and accidentally shot her instead, according to Traverse City police.

Television station UpNorthLive reported that police responded to a 9-1-1 call at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. A 33-year-old male told dispatchers that his failed suicide attempt had resulted in the death of a woman.

The man came outside with his gun when police arrived, but he then went back inside and attempted to flee through the back of the home.

Another shot was reportedly fired before the man was eventually apprehended. He was taken to Munson Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the hand.

MLive reported that Traverse City police planned to release more information on Wednesday.
