At first, Dayna Morales’ claim that a couple stiffed the New Jersey waitress on a tip and left an anti-gay note on the receipt fit a disturbing pattern. Her story went viral. Morales, a former Marine, raised thousands of dollars in sympathetic donations for the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Despite news reports to the contrary, this is not a simple, straight-forward matter and we have conducted our own internal investigation,” the restaurant said. “The results of that investigation are inconclusive as to exactly what happened between Ms. Morales and the customers that night. However, in light of the investigation and recent events, both Ms. Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms. Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant. We wish her well in the future.”
Morales was discharged from the Marines under less-than-honorable terms in May after after she stopped showing up, NBC 4 New York reported Tuesday.
Morales collected more than $3,000 in a PayPal account in donations during the imbroglio, but had not made a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project by this week, reported The Gothamist. Three people said they had received refunds, the site reported.
