A Washington state lawmaker said he was just engaging in trash talk when he dismissed the state of Arizona as “a desert racist wasteland.”

Democratic state Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon posted the comment Sunday after the Seattle Seahawks lost 17-10 to the Arizona Cardinals.

“Losing a football game sucks,” Fitzgibbon wrote. “Losing to a desert racist wasteland sucks a lot.”

The lawmaker later deleted the message but said it wasn’t intended to be serious.

But Fitzgibbon said his constituents “have not appreciated” the way Arizona treats immigrants, citing a 2010 law that requires law enforcement officers investigating other crimes to question the immigration status of anyone believed to be in the U.S. illegally.

One of Fitzgibbon’s Republican colleagues, state Rep. J.T. Wilcox said the message “makes us all look bad,” and the Democrat later clarified his comment on Twitter.

“Upset re hawks loss, and failure of smart immigration reform–shouldn’t have conflated the 2 though,” Fitzgibbon wrote. “Happy holidays, better for both in ’14.”
