Fate of Pope Francis’s ‘peace doves’ unknown after attack by crow and seagull

Two doves released into Saint Peter’s square by children flanking Pope Francis were attacked shortly after taking flight on Sunday.

Pope Francis had just given a speech appealing for peace in the Ukraine, where anti-government protests show no sign of abating.

Thousands watched as two children, standing in the window of the Apostolic Palace, released the birds. A giant seagull flew up from a perch below to attack one of the doves, while a black crow tracked down and began repeatedly pecking at the other.

The fate of the doves is unknown.
