A Texas man was in jail on Monday after accidentally shooting a 9-year-old girl in the head while illegally practicing with his firearm in his backyard.

According to The Dallas Morning News, 20-year-old Cristian Manzano was allegedly shooting at targets when one bullet went over a fence, through the neighbor’s window, and struck the girl in the head.

The girl was transported to Children’s Medical Center Dallas, where she was reportedly in critical condition on Sunday.

Neighbors told WFAA that there were four or five gunshots. After four men were questioned by authorities, Manzano was eventually charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child and discharging a firearm in city limits.

Manzano had been ordered to turn over a handgun as part of an earlier plea agreement, but it was not immediately clear if the same weapon was used in Saturday’s shooting.

He had pleaded guilty on Feb. 11 to unlawfully carrying a weapon and marijuana charges. At the time, he agreed to a $100 fine, and to forfeit the firearm.

The Dallas Morning News reported that neighbor Herbert Lopez had called the police about hearing gunshots coming from Manzano’s backyard on two other occasions.
