A Grand Junction, Colorado girl was banned from attending her school after shaving her head in a gesture of support toward a friend undergoing chemotherapy, KCCO-TV reported on Monday.
Caprock Academy student Kamryn Renfro cut her hair off after a friend, Delaney Clements, began chemo treatments as she tried to fight off neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer.
Officials at Caprock Academy later informed Renfro’s family that she would not be allowed to return to class after spring break because her shaved head violated the school’s dress code.
The school’s website specifies that female students’ hair should be “neatly combed or styled. No shaved heads.” The code also calls for hair to be “natural looking and conservative in its color.” Hats and bandannas are also banned from campus.
However, KCCO reported that Renfro will be allowed to attend class on Tuesday while Caprock officials convene a “closed-door meeting” to discuss the dress code.
