Tenn. woman says Satan told her to stab NASCAR-’worshipping’ husband at church
A Tennessee woman was arrested on Sunday and charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism after she allegedly drove her car into a church and stabbed her husband, claiming she was under orders from the Devil.
WATE-TV reported on Monday that 23-year-old Stephanie Faye Hamman was taken into custody following the bizarre attack against Steven Hamman and Providence Church in Church Hill.
The suspect reportedly left the couple’s apartment Sunday night, then drove her vehicle through the front doors of the church, located across the street. The victim went into the church and allegedly found her laying on the ground near the altar.
According to authorities, Stephanie Hamman told them, “When Steven came to check on me, I told him the Devil was in me and I stabbed him in the heart.” The Times-News reported that the suspect was taken by relatives to a local hospital, where authorities later found her and arrested her. She is being held without bond and due in court on Wednesday.
Stephanie Hamman was also quoted as saying, “I smoke a bunch of weed. I love to smoke it. Sometimes when I do, I start seeing things that others don’t. Isn’t God good? He told me that this would happen, and just look, I am OK.”
The Kingsport Times-News reported that the suspect went after her husband because she felt he was “worshipping the NASCAR race at Bristol,” a reference to a racing event held the same day.
After being stabbed, the victim pulled the knife out of his chest, then retreated to the apartment, where police and medical personnel treated him before he was also hospitalized.
Though the suspect told authorities she had recently been baptized at Providence Church, Pastor Joel Trigg told WATE he did not know her. The Times-News reported, however, that she may have been baptized at a church in Scott County, Virginia, hours before the alleged attack.
