In the great state of California, Republican office holders are about as rare as high school diplomas in the Palin household. Even in an election year, the state GOP brain-trust is having a hell of a time rounding up anyone who can – at the very minimum – fog a mirror, to run for office in a state that the Kenyan Muslim carried by 20 points.
The problem is that there are few state-based conservative media outlets that are sympathetic to their cause and that shallow end on that pool is about to be drained even more now that right-wing homo-hating lunatic Doug Manchester has decided that throwing money down a media rat-hole in order to become mini-Murdoch is a maybe not such a good business plan:
In San Diego, word on the business street, now rebounding among a number of daily publishers around the country, is that the ownership of the San Diego Union-Tribune, now renamed U-T San Diego, wants out. That’s right: Rumor has it that flamboyant owner Papa Doug Manchester (good David Carr rundown on the “pro-business” Manchester era) wants to sell. His sometimes-CEO John Lynch has been assigned the task of finding a buyer, that rumor says. Lynch has previously talked publicly about wanting to buy more papers.
So when you can’t get your message out to a state that is largely indifferent, if not downright hostile, to you: who you gonna call?
Feeling the need to dilute the brand named after a guy most notable for screaming “Stop raping people!’ at random folks on the street, – and probably to give Joel Pollack something to do since he got demoted to ‘Go Check The Wires And Then Fetch Me A Big Gulp, Easy Ice, Editor’ – the Breitbart Mausoleum for Misfit Humans has created a Breitbart California edition because…. well they’re based there, so why the hell not? Print business cards!
Rounding out the cast of the usual idiots and future potential litigants (seriously, how screwed up do you have to be that screech weasel Dana Loesch runs away instead of opening fire on the ‘newsroom’?) the crew at BreitCal roped in a few California pols to give them the street cred that, quite frankly, they’ll never achieve, but ‘participation certificate’ for trying, you guys.
Their biggest ‘coup’ was landing House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA.) who wrote them a glowing report card even before they showed work:
“This weekend’s launch of Breitbart California is a testament to his legacy of holding our public officials accountable for their actions,” McCarthy wrote. “I look forward to the voice of reform-minded Californians being represented without bias as Breitbart California launches.”
Then this happened:
….and two days later McCarthy checks out:
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Monday distanced himself from Breitbart News after the outlet combined an image of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) with Miley Cyrus.
McCarthy’s office asked Breitbart to remove an op-ed he wrote, after its website used artwork superimposing Pelosi’s head on the body of the bikini-clad pop star.
“We didn’t condone them. We thought it was the right thing to do to ask for the column to be removed,” Matt Sparks, a spokesman for McCarthy, told the Los Angeles Times.
In their defense, Breitbart compared themselves to a skit on Saturday Night Live, which sounds about right for a news website.
Fortunately for them, they have so far hung on to Tom McClintock (R-Elk Grove) who says ‘no gun, no Wall Street crimes,’ overly sensitive eats-his-feelings gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari, and Art Laffer who will presumably being doing graphics for them of the non-twerking Nancy Pelosi-kind.
No word yet on the negotiations to get GOP candidate Glenn Champ to write a relationship column….
