A life sciences teacher at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, LA was placed on six days’ administrative leave this week after she allegedly called a 12-year-old female student a “sassy slut” in front of other students.

According to KTBS, the girl’s mother was horrified to hear what the teacher reportedly said about her daughter, who has never previously had disciplinary issues at school.

“I’m just still numb about what happened and the disciplinary action that the school had taken,” said parent Marteen Mitchell.

“I don’t think it was fair at all,” Mitchell said of the teacher’s suspension. “They initially told me that she would receive one day suspension with pay and when I made it back to my job, I received a call from the principal that stated that the situation was serious and they wanted me to know that they would give her five additional days.”

Jackie Landsdale, a spokesperson for the Red River Teachers United Federation told KTBS that it is a mistake to think of the paid suspension as any kind of vacation for the teacher.

“I want to tell you any teacher or school employee that I’ve ever dealt with, who has been put out on paid administrative leave is very upset about it, they are very upset about the fact that they have been accused of something,” Landsdale said.

The suspension from teaching, she said, is the first step in a standard procedure for investigating incidents between students and teachers.

“In public education,” she explained, “we have a policy that is actually an investigation policy, that once a teacher or school employee is accused, and it could be anything from corporal punishment — hitting pushing or shoving that kind of thing — if it happened or it is perceived to happen, what typically happens is the employee is put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.”
