A high school senior in Cherryville, NC said that she was kicked out of her school’s prom for wearing pants.

Shafer Rupard and her friends are students at Cherryville High School and on Saturday night, they attended the school’s prom. WBTV reported, however that Rupard had only just arrived when a school administrator approached her on the dance floor.

“The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing,” said Rupard to WBTV. “I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I’ll take those off and she was like no, it’s the pants.”

Rupard was wearing a pair of red skinny jeans, which her mother Shawn McQuaige said was perfectly appropriate to the occasion.

“It’s just the way she’s always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin,” McCuaige said. “We want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself.”

Rupard and her friends said they searched the searched the school’s code of conduct manual and were unable to find any rules for prom dress code at all.

The school, however, has neither admitted any wrongdoing nor offered Rupard or her family an apology.
