An American Government teacher in Overland Park, Kansas was suspended after he allegedly made a comment about obscenity and the courts.

According to one of the students in Ben Keech’s class at Shawnee Mission North High, Tanner Erb, the class was “talking about the history of pornography how it used to have to be purchased at like Blockbuster, like at video stores. [Keech] was talking about how one girl can walk in there and get 101 Dalmatians and you could walk in there, being a lonely adult male, and get a movie 101 Ways to Do your Mom, and how ironic that was.”

Erb told FOX 4 that the statement was discovered after a student taped it Keech’s desk, where it joined other amusing quotations from Keech’s class in a collection of what are called “Keech Quotes.”

“Everyone got a kick out of it, everyone laughed and that’s the quote that she wrote down and put up on the desk,” Erb said.

Erb’s mother was surprised by the suspension after learning what the underlying offense was. “At first I was thinking there was going to be more to the story. I kept thinking it had to be something bigger than this because it seems like a really minor thing to suspend a teacher over,” she told FOX 4.

She added, “[w]hen we begin micromanaging everything our teachers say, then we are walking a really fine line. We begin to take out of education what they have to offer. The passion that they have to give to their students.”

Keech’s students, both present and former, are rallying behind their teacher.

“He is very helpful. One of the most helpful teachers I’ve had and is just a really great teacher,” senior Isaac Jonas told KCTV.

Another former student, Darcy Heck, told KCTV that she was “furious” when she learned of the suspension. “It is ridiculous,” she said. “He is like one of those teachers that helps you learn the subject and not just gives you paper work.”

She started a Change.org petition calling for Keech’s immediate reinstatement. It has acquired more than 800 signatures so far.

According to the school district, Keech has been on the faculty for almost 12 years, and this is the first time he has been disciplined. He has been suspended for two weeks, but has hired an attorney and will report to the school board for a hearing soon.
