Iranian mother of two faces death by stoning over alleged adultery

A 42-year-old Afghan woman convicted of adultery in 2006 is set to be stoned to death shortly, according to human rights activists.

Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani, a mother of two, convicted of adultery, could be stoned to death under Iranian law. Iran’s penal code is extremely severe: in 2005, the country executed two alleged gay teenagers by hanging them to death (a photograph of the incident appears above right).

“Legally it’s all over,” Mina Ahadi, head of the International Committee Against Stoning and the Death Penalty told CNN Sunday. “It’s a done deal. Sakineh can be stoned at any minute.”

“That is why we have decided to start a very broad, international public movement. Only that can help.”

According to her lawyer, Sakineh was forced to confess after being subjected to 99 lashes.

Notes CNN: “Ashtiani, 42, will be buried up to her chest, according to an Amnesty International report citing the Iranian penal code. The stones that will be hurled at her will be large enough to cause pain but not so large as to kill her immediately.”

CNN has more details.

well – if the women of Iran are stupid enough to “put up with” this Mistreatment…..maybe THEY should “Keep sex from thier men” til they get rights? Revolt women of Iran – Revolt!

Israeli propaganda. What does the picture of two men with nooses around their necks have to do with this “story”??

[comment from the story on cnn website]

    USofIsrael
This article is rubbish. It is nothing but Anti Iranian Propoganda. The only weapon against [z] propoganda is the truth :

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was interrogated in 2006 for the murder of her husband. In the interrogation session, Sakineh confessed to committing adultery with Nasser and Seyyed Ali, the two men responsible for her late husband’s murder. In May 2006, branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Oskoo in the province of Eastern Azerbaijan (in northwestern Iran) sentenced Sakineh to 99 lashes for committing adultery. After serving her sentence, she was released. Four months later, branch 6 of the Criminal Court of Azerbaijan sentenced her to death by stoning for adultery while married.

She slept with the men who murdered her husband. The men who murdered her husband have already been executed. Had she not slept with them, and had her husband not felt the need to fight for the honour of his family when catching his wife having relations with other men in his own house, he would be alive and none of this would be happening.

This woman STILL does not deserve to be stoned to death, unless if there are 4 witnesses to the actual act, or if she has confessed (which she did). She has now renegged on her confession, so she will NOT be stoned to death, but she WILL be held in jail long enough to serve out the remainder of her sentence for accessory to Murder, in the murder of her husband.

This is all just a [z] witch hunt, but if CNN had done its work properly, they would let the public know how she was responsible for the death of her husband because she brought strange men into her house. This is all about making Iran look bad. This is all about making it seem like protesting Iran will change Irans position on things… The US needs to replace their foreign policy chiefs, they are getting to be real transparent. Don't take my word for any of this, simply do a google or Yahoo search on this woman and you will discover the truth for yourself…. then you will see how the [z] prey on the weak minded and how they manipulate mass media.

Another example of what happens when you allow religion to guide your legal system. Barbarism and inhumanity dominate every time. What's pathetic is that a significant percentage of women there agree with these draconian laws, a classic example of Stockholm Syndrome.

  • DougI

    Religion is barbaric.

  • Savantster

You're about as stupid as they come.

  • Savantster

You're blaming CNN (valid criticism), but where is the also justifiable slap to “journalism” here at Raw Story? We're here for news, and they regurgitate the main stream media misinformation.

  • Savantster

Religion is proof that virtually everything about us is a learned behavior, ingrained from birth by constant bombardment from our environment. This isn't Stockholm Syndrome, this is rampant and deep seeded brain washing/conditioning from birth.

Education. Knowledge. Those change the person and break the cycle. That's why it's outlawed in every backward culture out there, the power brokers know things and the subjects are not allowed to learn anything. It's exactly why the educational system in America was dismantled.

Religion is a disease. It rots the mind and destroys the ability to think and be rational. Our species can not move forward until religion from thousands of years ago, built up by cave dwellers, is expunged from our collective minds. Our species needs to grow up and shed the adult version of childish fairy tales, invisible friends, and boogeymen.

Our religion is money or mammon… their religion is hate… the argument that Church and State ever could be separate is a fallacy from the start. I'm only going to make it worse for myself, how could it get any worse. Jehovah, Jehovah, Jehovah!

  • Crispus Attucks

Oh my God, someone gets it. Thanks, you made my day.

As it was written in the bible of people stoned to death we now see it as a crime. The US learned when we boiled slaves as punishment, hung men from trees and even raped woman. We showed we understand tortured as we did so with the innocent men/women/children we held in Gitmo. We see Texas has killed prisoners who were really innocent but we say stuff happen. This story is nothing that isn't done in countries around the World including the USA. We see our Law Makers hold Religious Family values as their shield while they commit adultery and some look for sex in men's room. We did nothing to Rep. Mark Foley who molested kids working in DC. Let's take a look in the mirror before accusing others of the same thing we do. As for Israel well their taking body parts and it's sick.

  • when_the_whip_comes_down

Religion is not just some sort of spiritual insight but rather a political tool used to manipulate the masses. When you can control the masses on faith facts are not needed.

  • BroccoliRob

    Wow, moral equivalency run wild.

What kind of a country can use such barbaric means???? You can disagree with Capital Punishment, but surely you can agree that being given the USA lethal injection is more humane than stoning or being allowed to strangle from hanging from a crane. (hanging involves a quick death by neck breaking, these people are not hung, they are strangled.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1126824848 Mary Bennett

If this was Iraq, Afganistan or any other country that allows stoning, AND WE WERE AWARE OF IT, you bet your booty that we would be protesting. What kind of a question is that? You think this is anti-Iranian?
No, this is pro-woman. This pro-human
    Your comment is unbelievable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1126824848 Mary Bennett

Please document where in the US the Federal or State Government sanctioned Capital Punishment by means of stoning?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1126824848 Mary Bennett

Let me make this as clear as possible, NO ONE DESERVES TO BE STONED to death.
And were those witnesses in the bed with her while she had the “relations?” If they were, why aren't they being stoned too?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1126824848 Mary Bennett

I think most people would confess also, if they received 99 lashes. You'd do anything to stop the continued whipping. We are protesting her being in prison, she already payed by the 99 lashes. We are protesting ANYONE being stoned to death. How inhumane!!! Just reading about how they pick the stones for the punishment is enough to make the skin crawl, enough to cause pain, but not enough to kill right away?
Barbaric and anti woman and anti human

  • boudin

Come on, RawStory. She was charged with death by stoning? Obviously you mean she was sentenced to death by stoning. She was charged with adultery.

Blatant editorial oversights like this tend to undermine your credibility.

Of course it would and it has been before. You must not read much news. Similar stories have been posted about Saudi Arabia and Syria. Fact of the matter is, there aren't many places on the planet where this type of punishment is handed out anymore and Iran is one of the largest offenders and makes the news often with this sickening type of behavior.
To suggest that it is only being printed because Iran is the subject is about as myopic as it comes.

I believe that we all have missed the “other” important question- It takes two to have the affair so what about the man? If this was the end result in America for all of the people committing adultry, then I don't believe there would be an issue. When you disobey the laws of God, there is a price to pay.

  • http://www.911Blogger.com/ Orangutan.

If CNN's covering it there's probably a bit of propaganda with it. Sad to say, they don't cover the truth or do any real investigative journalism into the root causes of our problems.

  • boudin

Did you read the article? She is charged with having slept with two men other than her husband, and they have both been executed.

As to your superstitious comment, when you obey what people call the laws of god, someone else generally pays the price.

  • JohnBurgoyne

I have asked myself and the answer is yes.

  • Savantster

the point is the different physical action results in the same moral thing. barbaric abuse that sane, rational, civil people do NOT engage in.. but the U.S. is no more blameless than Iran. You're bent on one person (or dozens of women over the short term), the point is it's codified in the behavior of many nations and affects people all over the planet.

You're clearly missing the point of how this is about religion, and the distinct LACK of reason and compassion present in a lot of people who adhere to religion. Get rid of religion, put logic and reason in place, and your victim here does not get stoned to death. But you can't have it both ways. Religion is the core problem here, agree that it needs to be cured or you have no ground to stand on.

  • Savantster

Stoning happens all around the world in 3rd world countries and religitard nations. It seemingly doesn't rise to the level of National News in America, unless it's being pushed for some agenda. The comment isn't unbelievable; what's unbelievable is your failure to see the bigger picture, to process multiple veins of thought at one time, to have any desire of greater understanding than the single action in front of your face.

You should be protesting the core problem, not just one action. Protest oppressive religion of all kinds.

  • Savantster

A country ruled by the laws of religion.

  • Savantster

why would you obey the words men wrote down on paper that they claimed came from voices in their head? Those same men who lived in golden palaces while those they preached to lived like rats? You don't see the rigged game of religion out there?

A wife cheating on her husband is a relationship dispute, not a criminal concern. Governments have NO business getting involved, period. This is about men wanting power and control over SOMETHING in their lives since nature and life are content to toss humans around.. so those pathetic and vile men turn women into property.. hence their religion codifying it and their laws punishing for it. There's a reason we keep using the word “barbaric”.. these are people barely a stutter step above cave men.

  • Big_Alpha1

Yes, I read the article above and there's no mention of her having slept with two other men, nor any mention of their having been executed.

  • usmcr

Now this is a country that is ready for a democracy. I bet all those people throwing the stones can't wait to hear about things like “assualt and battery”, “criminal assault with a deadly weapon”, murder and attempted murder. Let alone having the state tell them how to raise their kids… LOL

Oh yeah… we'll have these people straighten out, and voting in a democracy no matter how many trillions of dollars it takes.
Hell we don't care if it bankrupts and destroys our own country…
    but these people N E E D a democracy,..ROFLMAO…
    Wake the hell up people…

  • boudin

Really? And are you the one that gets to make the rules, Dude/Dudette?

    Screw off.

  • Savantster

That info came in a comment. RAW didn't put up the background pieces, it would diffuse the outrage too much. Granted, outrage is warranted when you're talking about stoning, but when you mix in a murder and the law applied to everyone, it changes the frame a bit.

  • Savantster

Uh, they have a Democracy.. and they elect people that will continue to keep a Theocracy in place.

you're confusing the process with the overall ideology of those elected.

  • boudin

Ah, thanks, Savantster. I knew I had read that on this site, but was having trouble finding it again. And my apologies to Tina and Big_Alpha1 for confusing things.

Seems that once upon a time there was this holy man that stated, “let him that is without sin cast the first stone.” I'm just saying.
Execution is social failure. Sort of along the same vein as war or torture or illegal rendition or detention. Our world seems awash in failure on so many levels.

Religion cannot be lumped like that. I am a person of faith, and my faith does not condone any of these things. A person can have faith in a loving and compassionate and forgiving God, not go to church, and not be doing anything wrong. I have had multiple proofs of God's existence, and He is the core of who I am. To say that religion (i.e. all religion – in any form?) is corrupt, is incorrect, and very hurtful. Studying the core of problems, yes, there is government responsibility, and people USE religion sometimes for bad means. Too, there are harmful religions and cults, but as a person of faith, I must speak up to tell you that in your anger you are being hurtful to those who are truly good and kind, who's lives happily revolve around Jesus. Jesus died so that people are forgiven. When people are abusing one another in these ways today, it sickens God as much as it sickens us. These punishments are old testament type – not new covenant. Make sure not to villify all “religion” using blanket statements. And, may I make the distinction that when religion is used by governments or media, or anyone, – used and intertwined with corruption in some way – that is very very different from the actual people of faith and from a forgiving God. We know that there is corruption, but be sensitive to those who are not a part of it.

  • morty62

I agree. It was a loose analogy. Stockholm Syndrome is a coping mechanism, a way to survive in a traumatic, potentially life-threatening situation. Religion is a long-term brainwashing. I recently saw the documentary Hell House about a church that holds haunted house every year focusing on abortion, drinking and driving, drugs, suicide, homosexuality, domestic violence etc … The whole thrust is to always put the blame on the teenager for not “giving his life to Jesus” and to make him or her feel terrified that when they die they will burn for eternity. At the end each group is herded into a regular room, berated by an intimidating drill -sergeant type and offered the chance to pray and become “saved.” In the group I saw about a fourth of the kids went in, most crying and clearly traumatized by the “haunted house.” It's very twisted and to me crosses the line of psychological abuse. Religion truly is a sickness, one that can only be cured by knowledge, rationality and a learning environment free from the kind of coercion I described.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/KQY6B2RXCGIDV5B6SEK4ZL34M4 Tina

We actually need to focus on “fixing” our own country and stop trying to conquer all other countries issues. These long standing issues have lasted over decades and are not going to be reconciled over night. There are many heart breaking stories all over the world each day and when you cannot put an immediate stop to it, just pray.

  • 52711

Read the Old Testament and tell me how kind and compassionate Jesus father, Yaweh, was. Jesus also talks alot about damnation, hell, and everlasting torment and torture. Do these guys sound any more tolerant than those religious freaks in Iran. Christoher Hitchens put it nicely when he said “religion poisons everything”.

  • when_the_whip_comes_down

You give me butterflies knowing that there are some caring people there however I am quite sure that the church that you speak of is the same church that would pervert the history that it teaches you so that you would not be aware of a series of the most horrific crimes on humanity were committed by the church. Relatively recently It was the church that was responsible for the political rise of Hitler, Franco and Mussolini. The Concordats of 1928, 1931 and 1933 prove this. The crusades (more than 12 of them) of the last 600 years were directed by the pope and his Jesuits. Was it not Dubya who said on 9-11 after hopping off the helicopter before going into the White house that “this is a new kind of crusade”? Didn't he repeat that during his open session of congress on Sept. 19,01?
I am reading a book that is the best book that I have ever read. It is called the Secret History of the Jesuits and it was written by a former Jesuit. It is the nuts and bolts of what was behind the history of the last 600 years…. I find it to be fascinating.

I can see a pattern with the way that we look at other countries,it’s always the same.We need to let these people handle the problem themselves. And we can deal with hate that we have for each other. If our own neighbors can fall around us,and we don’t have the heart to help them.I really can’t see how our country’s attitude has lasted this long.

  • jimthebeam

If you read the story you will know. It was part of a side note that that said
“Iran's penal code is extremely severe: in 2005, the country executed two alleged gay teenagers by hanging them to death (a photograph of the incident appears above right).”

What does this report have to do with propaganda let alone Israeli?

  • Benway for the Nova Police

Maybe if we hadn't overthrown the democratic government of Iran at the behest of BP this wouldn't be happening. Blame the damned CIA.

  • Syed92

It is the law of that land, let them deal with it. In kentuky, there is a county where if you eat fried chicken with knife and fork, you can be put in jail for 6 months. In any case, we must look at the results of crime and the evil of where one woman has 6 children all from different fathers, and none to support, and none married to the woman.

  • Benway for the Nova Police

Why are you quoting an obvious apologist for the Iranian theocratic government? And you don't even reproduce the name of the person who made the comment. You are pathetic.

  • Benway for the Nova Police

How do you know it's misinformation?

  • Savantster

because the “whole story” seems to be that she's being executed for being complicit in her husband's death? implying she's being killed just for adultery is “inaccurate”, or “misleading”.

  • Savantster

You can be a decent and compassionate person without believing in invisible sky fairies. If you're decent because the book said to be and you fear burning in hell, you're being controlled even if it isn't through church leaders.. you're doing something out of fear, not because you derived the path on your own.

I keep referring to the Alleged Jesus (in other posts in the past).. know why? There is no documented history of his existence by those historians alive at the same time Jesus was alleged to be alive. All of the “quotes” of Jesus were written between 50 and 200 years after he died.. how can those be quotes? Yet, none of the people documenting history at the time he was supposed to be alive ever wrote down anything about his “miracles”, or his encounters with KINGS and the like? ..suspicious.

Then you have the 3000 to 4000 years of the “same story” existing before he was even born, and they line up with his story.. and 6 thousand years ago “the son” that gives life, dies in December for 3 days and rises to the heavans again.. is in all probability, ancient mans stories about the Sun reaching winter solstice on Dec. 21, being “dead”, or at a low spot for 3 days, and rising again on the 25th… hence “the birth of the son” on Dec. 25 in modern times.

Couple that with no way to reconcile all the death and misery on this planet with a “compassionate god”? wtf? punishing people for thousands of years for something they had no part in? that's compassionate? we're all born “dirty”? wtf is that?

there is nothing in logic or reason that supports some creator god that gives one squirt of shit about humans or humanity or this planet or any such thing. You should probably ask yourself, what makes you “believe”? .. the answer will likely be one of two things.. you were indoctrinated as a child, or you went through some painful, turbulent time in your life and either needed something to hold on to or things “got better” and you attribute that to intervention by god.

  • My3Cats

I don't think she makes that assertion. She's pointing out that the USA sees stoning as a crime, but engaged and engages in other forms of capital punishment and torture. It looks to me like she's calling out America's hypocrisy.

  • seen2much

Is this wrong and repulsive? Sure, to us this is very wrong. If I lived in Iran, they would probably stone me a dozen times over for how I live. Thing is, I don't live in Iran, I live in Texas, and how I live here let's just say rubs many of the locals the wrong way..

That said, I feel very sorry for the price these people are paying for scratching an itch many of their neighbors scratch but didn't get caught for.

And now for the real issue: This story is being hawked in both the left and right leaning press, according to the target audience… The objective is to have you dear reader not feel so bad when we start dropping bombs on Iran.. Problem is, as soon as the first explosive detaches from the first rack, the price of gas explodes over $5USD… And no amount of propaganda and spin is going to ease that dildo in…

So they voted to take a step away from the theocracy, just the theocracy didn't let those votes be honestly counted.

Yep, it was Wall Street muslims who robbed the country blind and destroyed the planet's economy.

  • kingfish46815

Do the crime, do the time. Actually we should have a law like that here but lets apply that punishment to those accused of public corruption and lying politicians in general as well as unfaithful wives. I would be willing to substitute lawyers.for wives.

Spoken like a true fanatic and a barbarian. This isn't the 11th century. If stoning and disfiguring people is part of your religions beliefs, your are so far out of the mainstream of contemporary civilized thought that you should be institutionalized along with those who share such despicable beliefs.

  • n3542576

“This story is nothing that isn't done in countries around the World including the USA.” Bullshit. Cruel and unusual punishment has been unconstitutional in this county since 1791.

The Rev. Franklin Graham, who outraged Muslims in 2001 when he said that Islam “is a very evil and wicked religion,” recently told an interviewer fthat he hasn't changed his mind about the faith.

“Do they want to indoctrinate me? Yes. I know about Islam. I don't need an education from Islam,” he said. “If people think Islam is such a wonderful religion, just go to Saudi Arabia and make it your home. Just live there. If you think Islam is such a wonderful religion, I mean, go and live under the Taliban somewhere. I mean, you're free to do that.”

I agree the other persons involved must be stoned to death as well! The woman did not have illegitimate sex with herself. I respect the Iranian judicial system, but a pieace is missing here!

COULD IT BE JUST APROPAGANDA MACHINE'S OTHER DUTY! MOSTLIKELY!!!

  • Savantster

You can always respect differences in culture, but you can also not tolerate abuses. Abuse comes from ignorance, and differences aside, no sane person can suggest education is a bad thing.

Enlightening a people won't change all of their cultural behaviors, but it will end most abuse.

  • Savantster

There is nothing more wrong with main stream Muslims than there is with main stream Christians. It's the theocrats and extremists that are a problem, in ALL religions.

UH OH! Call kingfish, another king of the morality police; Next time you injure yourself or someone commits a crime against you or your involved in ANY kind of lawsuite, i want you instead of hiring someone who knows what they are doing to go to court and with no representation and tell the judge and the other lawyer that “i would rather bury lawyers up to thier necks indiscriminatnly and throw rocks at thier face, as well as lying politicians in general as well as unfaithfull wives”. You tell them that! you tell them!

  • an0id

Before i mock you relentlessly for your factless acusations and diseention of american foundations I want you to find me exactly where you got this information “Obama supports” (islam) and what exactly is being done to let people of specificly islamic religious culture gain status into the united states; cuz right now all i see is a paranoid faux news viewer who isnt 100% informed. If you think your democratic government doesnt acknowlege that whats going on in places like france and denmark isnt a dangerous and looming problem then someone needs to take away your voting rights because you have no idea whats going and youra tea bagging faux watcher

A lawyer has put his two cents into the discussion. Now tell us about your public service – saving clients regardless of sex from hours of self gratification.

  • an0id

huh? Im not sure im understanding what your trying say exactly; that I stop people from masturbating? Were you masterbating in public, for hours, and now you want to throw stones at my head because someone like me (by your arrogant assumption) prosecuted you?

Im starting to think id like to throw stones at you.

  • when_the_whip_comes_down

A story like this makes me want to invade Iran so as to spare these poor Zionist media types from having to report on these kind of stores.

My citation from Lucretius translated into english reads 'There is no evil so great that religion has not persuaded people to commit it'; Voltaire held that this would live as long as the world.
