Exclusive: Internet was never free or open and never will be, media studies prof. says

Author: If Americans want a truly free network, ‘we’ve got to build it from scratch’

Secrets outlet WikiLeaks’ continuing struggle to remain online in the face of corporate and government censorship is a striking example of something few truly realize: that the Internet is not and never has been democratically controlled, a media studies professor commented to Raw Story.

“[T]he stuff that goes on on the Internet does not go on because the authorties can’t stop it,” Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age and Life, Inc.: How Corporatism Conquered the World and How to Take it Back”, said. “It goes on because the authorities are choosing what to stop and what not to stop.”

Rushkoff told Raw Story that the authorities have the ability to quash cyber dissent due to the Internet’s original design, as a top-down, authoritarian device with a centralized indexing system.

Essentially, all one needs to halt a rogue site is to delete its address from the domain name system registry.

“This is not rocket science,” said Rushkoff, who also teaches media studies at The New School University in Manhattan.

For example, the Dutch teenager arrested Thursday for helping to organize a denial of service attack on an ‘Operation Payback’ online chatroom: “They just took him off. He had his own server, and they just go, ‘Oh, nip this one!’” Rushkoff said.

This is why, he noted in a recent CNN editorial, the actual threat to PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and Amazon last week were “vastly overstated” in most media.

“The forces of bottom-up anarchy have reached a similar impasse, and the authorities of the Internet have once again demonstrated their ability to fend off any genuine peer-to-peer activity,” he explained. “This is a tightly controlled network, and you know, that’s why I think the Chinese do have it right in that they understand, ‘Oh, we can control this thing. We just censor the fuck out of it.”

“[The general public] didn’t realize that the only difference is now we can see that we’ve been censored.”

Rushkoff said that until the recent WikiLeaks attacks, no one has talked about plans to create truly democratic, peer-to-peer alternatives to the Internet’s centralized domain index since political activist Paul Garrin’s work in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Garrin’s anti-trust lawsuit NAME.SPACE v. Network Solutions, Inc. paved the way to lower domain registration costs by breaking up the monopoly-based domain name registration system into a wholesale-retail market.

“What [Garrin] showed was that if you don’t want to use the domain name servers that are officially in charge of the net, you can create your own network of domain name servers,” Rushkoff explained.

“You can set up your computer to look them up instead of the official ones where we can create our own names database, so I could be ‘Douglas.Rushkoff,’” he said. “You know, we could have any name we want. It’s arbitrary and artificial that they’ve limited domain at top-level registers to what they have. I mean, they have their reasons for it, of course, but it’s artificial.”

Most people, he said, would rather “just stream Steve Jobs’ authorized movies” than connect to an open public space that would almost certainly become demonized as a haven for terrorism and lawlessness.

“If we want to have a true peer-to-peer network, we now understand what it might look like,” Rushkoff said. ”If you want to have something real, we’ve got to build it from scratch.”

“Rushkoff told Raw Story that the authorities have the ability to quash cyber dissent due to the Internet’s original design, as a top-down, authoritarian device with a centralized indexing system.”

    Yeah, what he said.

I’ve been saying this forever. It’s really simple. If Iran did it, the US can do it with the flicker of a switch. At the present time, however, they’re simply trying to do it and profit from it. If that were to fail, it’s good night Gracie to the internet as we know it.

And this is what kids like “Anonymous” should be working on. A true solution for the us and screw the them.

For years I’ve been saying censorship is BS because they could make an AltNet just for children, or just for adults or just for hackers… hmmm. People limit the internet with their mind when in actuality it’s as limitless as the universe – it can go on forever because it takes up no truly measurable space except for the servers. One could have their own internet – and I’m betting more than one does.

Do you really think everything starts with http? That’s ridiculous!

Why is it that people can never wrap their mind around infinity?

  • Anonymous

Sigh. All well and good, but just how exactly are you going to communicate from your “peer to peer” Internet? Through magic? No. You’re going to use telephone lines that transmit data and wireless cell towers that transmit data. Who owns those telephone lines and cell towers? Private companies. Who do they take their orders from if they want to conduct business within borders? The government.

So it isn’t as easy as saying “we’ve got to build it from scratch”. You’ve got to find a media that a government can’t get its hands on. Laying telephone line and building cell towers can always be confiscated. Understand also that radio transmission points can be triangulated.

Ultimately, such a transport mechanism doesn’t currently exist. So you will have to work on piggybacking onto private industry’s core ability to conduct business using the Internet. Infiltrate it to the point that the only way they can remove your ability to use it is by turning off the Internet – and thus the ability to make money – for everyone. Capitalists will never settle for that.

    It’s a nice story, but it’s only half-true.

If the DNS deletes your entry for your domain name, typing the IP address into the browser bar will take you straight to the “censored” site.

So if you run a web site that is critical of some government official who deletes your DNS entry, just distribute your IP address, and anybody truly on the Internet can go to that site just as quickly as if they’d entered your domain name the day before it was deleted (and actually, a little faster, in fact).

  • Anonymous

This is a bit fatalist. Authoritarianism, by its fundamental design, relies on a smallish group to use force to quash what is visible. Crowdsourcing always wins against authoritarianism, since it can create 100 new connections for every connection an authoritarian, inefficient top-down regime takes out.

  • Anonymous

That’s what I mean by infintite. Do you really believe there aren’t servers working off the infrastructure’s regulated grid?

  • DesertSun59

Spoken like a person who’s NOT working in IT. You don’t need a website’s name to get access to it. All you need is the IP address. DNS servers TRANSLATE IP addresses to the familiar names you use. Us IT people know differently. You’d need to scrub the lease from existence to prevent the website from being accessible. Or use DoS to prevent others from reaching it. Better yet, to to the server and erase the website’s files to permanently prevent anyone from accessing it. But that still doesn’t prevent cached index services from serving you the most recent pages.

    Sheesh.

  • Anonymous

There’s one problem with this: They haven’t been able to take WikiLeaks offline. Yes, they’ve been able to cut off the domain name, but that’s not the same as cutting them off. They seem unable to do that without shutting the net down.

I agree that the net is nowhere near as free as most think, but the fact is that it’s not quite as controlled, either.

  • Anonymous

how about we just say NO to turning into China???

The article misses the main point: that if Chinese style censorship is coming to the West, the intent to censor information will derail any attempt to thwart it other than getting in their face and saying NO. All the sudden, you “democratic” web will be host to Bin Laden and other boogeymen.

Nope. Every website that contains links and forms, they all use DNS names. You’ll be able to access the website once, but every resource access from images, to css, to javascript, to forms… you’ll have to manually edit the source to replace DNS names with ip addresses.

Better would be to have a DNS cacher or even a transparent proxy installed, that remembers the IP addresses for the sites you visit.

Hmmm… well even if SETI found anything, it’s physically impossible to visit with our alien friends let alone communicate properly.. look at those news broadcasts with a reporter or interviewee on location via satellite link, they keep talking past each other…multiply by a view trillion lightyears ;-)

    DSS… good point though!

The problem is, to establish a community mesh based on DSS, and to have it grow and become a standard… the security through obscurity part is untenable, yes?

I’m thinking Freenet over WIFI mesh or something. What do you think? Possible? Everybody is anonymous, there are redundant paths… etc. etc.

I guess what they would do, is illegalize the hardware.

Sure, I know that, but Wikileaks isn’t the only host one might want to visit in case of DNS down.. many servers use absolute addresses, not just relative.

Other problem: if your local DNS replica uses periodical zone updates, then a censorship action will automatically propagate to your local DNS unless you know beforehand and can stop it.

The basic idea of a wi-fi mesh would be that everybody acts as a node, generating a tiny piece of the internet and connecting their piece to everyone around them. That way the authority would not be able to disconnect someone from someone else without killing maybe a dozen or a hundred nodes. This way the web traffic would be similar to P2P torrenting. Then just get enough nodes and the internet cannot be taken down without taking down everyone individually.

Advantages of wireless mesh networks include:
    Decreased need for Internet gateways
Collaborative redundant backup technology, which insures data security in the event of disk failure
The ability to configure routes dynamically
Lower power requirements, which could potentially be met by low-cost or renewable energy sources
Increased reliability: Each node is connected to several other nodes and if one drops out of the network, its neighbors simply find another route.

Internet will become like cable tv with tiered service. If you want to do a search on Google, for example, the results page will contain only those websites (big business sites) that are part of your basic ISP rate plan. In order to see results from, say, Raw Story (or other alternative sites), you’ll need to be paying the higher premium plan to your cable company. Most consumers won’t pay higher rates just to see pages from “fringe” websites or websites like Wikileaks. I envision that I will probably stop using the internet within a few years. It’s going to look like cell phone internet from 10 years ago.

TY! People have been saying this since the days of MMC in Vancouver… OMG I feel old. Yep Veronica was so awesome, Gopher needed an update! Search engines from before the Netscape era. That’s right SGI gave you those pictures…

You want a free internet you need to remove it from the government/acedemic NNL system.

Can’t oh well then you have to build one that was never part of it. This isn’t new this is an old argument. Nothing real hits the mainstream.

No I don’t have any links. If you don’t know what MMC is you have no idea what social media is.

The professor is a little confused about the DNS issue. Here is a much more accurate, if technical discussion of these same issues:

    http://www.renesys.com/blog/2010/12/wikileaks-moving-target.shtml

“Taking away WikiLeaks’ hosting, their DNS service, even their primary domain name, has had the net effect of increasing WikiLeaks’ effective use of Internet diversity to stay connected. And it just keeps going. As long as you can still reach any one copy of WikiLeaks, you can read their mirror page, which lists over 1,000 additional volunteer sites…

“Within a couple days’ time, the WikiLeaks web content has been spread across enough independent parts of the Internet’s DNS and routing space that they are, for all intents and purposes, now immune to takedown by any single legal authority…

“And we’re only considering the website itself, not the torrented data files, which ensure that cryptographically signed copies of the website and its backing data are dispersed beyond all attempts to recall or suppress the information they contain.”

    Does it have vulnerabilities?

What are the optimal distances between nodes?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3NVQSZZC5IM66JEOCSFJUV7FCE Jacques G

If the internet is being constructed with a “top-down” format, essentially a CENTRALLY CONTROLLED system of data transfer, the important thing then is to develop a non-centralized system. humans in society and technology, generally work on the concepts of “centralized” as with our own bodies, a brain, that controls the organism. Our governments function much the same way, the people focus their energy and votes (HYPOTHETICALLY!!) to get policies enacted in the interests of the people which the government carries out (HAH!). The Net is much the same way. A NEW net needs to be decentralized yet self contained and fully functional. A good popular model is the Star Trek BORG. The concept was a fully functional “system” in which all functions could be maintained even when major portions of it were destroyed. A new Net” would require the same systemwide functionality, where all participants would have, essentially infinitely multiple point access and pathway routing to function. No one portion could be “censored” or blocked without the rest still functioning. The “powers that be” would have to literally destroy the entire physical net to prohibit its functioning. A wireless system would be the best. Wikileaks did the next important step, ADAPT, by decentralizing its entity so no one individual or loss of a person could cause the collapse of the entire organization.

Yes, and many times, the pages contain absolute addresses.

Look, I just tested this a few days ago when DNS went down. I also verified it by looking at the page source. Some links are relative, but enough are absolute to cause severe problems..Not necessarily for Wikileaks, they designed their pages not to have this problem.

  • Knot

There is (another) movement underway right now to start an alternative DNS system that began from a blog posting by one of the founders of the Pirate Bay.

Here is a wiki link for it:
    http://dot-p2p.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

edit: I mentioned and linked to freenet, but then read the comments and it was already discussed and linked.

Any website that is concerned that a government or company would want to take it down by disassociating its name from its IP address, should always post its IP address on its main page so people can go directly to it. Raw Story’s IP address is 173.231.137.186 so you can connect directly to it by simply typing http://173.231.137.186. You may want to add a bookmark that points directly to Raw Story’s IP address, you know… just in case… ;-)

  • jimbowski

Fine, but most subversive websites don’t have the popularity that Wikileaks has. Most radical or unconventional thinkers can still be blocked by big business ISPs. Most websites don’t have mirrors.

They can be changed in a flash with a bit of software that does search & replace. Search for the string that makes a link absolute, and replace it with the appropriate string to make it relative. It isn’t a big problem.

It’s a nuisance, but it isn’t a problem that is going to keep a site shut down.

    Frequency disruptors. Geez. : )

Meanwhile, you might as well go back to using pony express for sending information if mesh is your answer. Darknets are nice for friends trading warez but hardly ubiquitous, which is how the Internet disrupts the powers that be.

Separate is not the answer. It has to be systemic, to the point that removing it takes down the very source of income itself.

Do you understand what a WIFI mesh is?

Besides, they could also nuke us all… I can think of 1099 scenarios in which they can kill or disrupt us all.

If you think that bypassing the DNS system is the “magic bullet” you are WRONG.

You need to learn more about how networking works before you go around pushing your bogus solutions.

It is VERY VERY EASY to block a site by its IP address. The Internet DOES route around damage in general but FACE IT your ISP only has a few upstream connections and it is VERY VERY EASY to add blocking rules to each of them.

Your attempts to bypass DNS will only encourage the providers to LOOK FOR your bypassing attempts and block them too.

Trust me the people who work at your ISP are a lot more clever than you are, they will see through your ruse very quickly and shut you down. Remember that they REALLY CAN see every single packet that you send and receive. Even if the packet is encrypted, its destination is not, and they can tell who you are talking to.

    Be careful out there.

Which is to say that the current WikiLeaks episode being played out in full public view has succeeded in revealing the overarching issues that have long kept Western activists from turning the web into an immaterial plane of immanent info-freedom, something that its founder Julian Assange has when he is not facing the ardent attempts of Western states to eviscerate him exposed. An exposition which one could argue has been the primary goal of Wikileaks, subsequent leaks aside.

You must be under 25, and never had to communicate in a hostile environment…. If you are transmitting a signal, somebody can and will sniff you out if what you are transmitting is of any importance.. You could be clever, using a frequency hopping system that syncs both sides with algorithms.. But if your opponent is prepared to hunt you down, you will still be found..

Receiving is not the problem, nobody can tell what you received.. But what you want to do is communicate, that involves transmission. You can frequency hop and encrypt all you want, but it can still be detected and deduced that you are saying something that the powers that be want to keep you from spreading.. So, even if they can’t figure out where you are or what you are saying, they can simply transmit over whatever frequency or frequencies you are using and “Blast the bagpipes” right over your line.

As far as how good they are at finding you: Back when I was but knee-high to a grasshopper my dad was a serious CB fanatic.. He had more than a few illegal transmitters and played cat and mouse with the FCC… You’d be amazed how fast your government can respond to a hot transmission.. My dad never got caught, but he was faster and smarter than the average bear, at least when it came to dodging the law.

Secure communications have NEVER been the domain of the stupid or slow, nothing has changed in that regard.

You must be under 25, and never had to communicate in a hostile environment.

You must be over 55, and still dreaming of those glory days you never had. I’m over 25, but who cares. You either get it or you don’t.

“You can frequency hop and encrypt all you want, but it can still be detected and deduced that you are saying something that the powers that be want to keep you from spreading”

I believe the majority of WIFI networks is now encrypted. How to distinguish one encrypted data blob from the other?

“So, even if they can’t figure out where you are or what you are saying, they can simply transmit over whatever frequency or frequencies you are using and “Blast the bagpipes” right over your line.”

At the cost of disabling all other WIFI traffic. Locally, by the way, you can overcome such ‘blasting’ by hijacking the frequency. If you were involved in ether piracy, you should have known this. Friis transmission equation.

“Secure communications have NEVER been the domain of the stupid or slow, nothing has changed in that regard.”

Which is why the only venue you have, to bask in the non-existent glory you fantasize about, is bloviating in Rawstory comment threads about things you don’t truly understand, while playing the age card… unsuccessfully.

I’ve had my dealings with more than your fair share of charlatans in my life, who just can’t muster the modesty to admit they don’t know everything, and instead, just keep on cackling and playing the pretender.

Was I being mean? I apologize.

Do you happen to know of such software? I know I can search & replace text with any editor, but obviously this is not what you mean, is it.

That’s exactly what I mean. A web page is a straight-forward ASCII text file, so it doesn’t take sophisticated software to do it.

A lot of html editors can handle search & replace over a large number of files at once with a single command.

Yes, but how would you edit the HTML source in place (you are viewing a live HTML page), and furthermore, should you do so, you will have to do it again for every page you load.

    True or false?

I know about text processing, it’s my specialty.

Once a page is displayed, you can’t change it – but that’s not really the question. It’s subsequent displays of the page that count. Just because it’s displayed a certain way once doesn’t mean it can’t be changed to display differently. If you couldn’t, then corrections could not be made.

The solution is simple: Change all links on WikiLeaks pages to relative addresses. Once changed, then the entire site can be copied and displayed from any server, and the links will always point to the correct, local address.

If your browser doesn’t display the changed file, then all you need to do is clear history or clear that page from history, and it will then be forced to display the changed page.

It used to be that the US held the Domain Names of Planet Earth because our government didn’t delete and censor domain names. Now that isn’t the case. So why not let China run it, since they’ll do the same thing for half the price.

[...] Internet was never free or open and never will be – i’ve worked with internet long enough to know that he’s largely correct. i have about as much freedom as is practically affordable these days, but if my host provider decided that i was doing something illegal, they would shut me down and there would be very little i could do about it, whether i actually was doing something illegal or not. my impression is that the only way for me to prevent that is to buy my own server and a backbone connection, which is prohibitively expensive at the moment… and even then, i still have to connect to an internet which, if they decide to do so, can block anyone from ever being able to see, or get to my server… [...]
