Dems invite Americans to wedding between GOP and Big Oil

WASHINGTON – As rising gas prices top the concerns of many Americans, Democrats are capitalizing on the moment to portray Republicans as wedded to the oil industry — and they’re invoking the royal wedding to make their point.

“You are cordially invited to the R-Oil Wedding,” reads a new website created by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, one day before Friday’s high-profile wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“Please join special guest Speaker John Boehner in celebrating the sacred and lasting union between the Republican Party and Big Oil,” the faux invitation continues, featuring cursive writing, a backdrop of roses, and a photo-shopped image of Boehner wearing a crown and a regal outfit. “Send your wishes to the happy couple.”

The website is, in part, an attempt to put Boehner on the spot for recently signaling openness to stripping tax breaks for oil companies. “It’s certainly something we should be looking at,” he said Tuesday. “We’re in a time when the federal government’s short on revenues. They ought to be paying their fair share.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pounced, President Barack Obama called on Congress to “take immediate action” to repeal oil subsidies, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wrote a letter urging Boehner to hold a vote on the matter.

Then Boehner slowly backed away, saying through a spokesman that his remarks were designed to avoid falling into the “trap” of defending big oil companies, but said “raising taxes was a non-starter.” He declined to specify whether he considered repeal of some subsidies a tax increase.

That’s the issue at the heart of the fake DCCC invitation.

“In lieu of gifts, please send corporate tax breaks at the expense of middle class Americans,” it says.

Republicans, in response, are poised to blame Obama for doing “nothing to address skyrocketing gas prices,” if a recent press release from Boehner is any indication.
