PBS documentary sheds light on marijuana’s cancer-killing properties

By Stephen C. Webster

The cancer-killing properties of marijuana were the subject of discussion in a PBS documentary that aired this week to little media fanfare.

While using marijuana to kill cancer may sound like a wild claim to some, it struck Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti as a great idea. In his studies as professor of pathology and microbiology for the University of South Carolina, he tested synthetic cannabis drugs on cancer cells and developed a formula that was able to completely eradicate cancer cells in a test tube.

A follow-up on mice afflicted with cancer found that up to 30 percent in the test group completely rejected their disease, while others had their tumors significantly reduced. The same drug is now being tested on humans with Leukemia.

But it’s not just Dr. Nagarkatti who sees the medical value of marijuana: it’s the whole pharmaceutical industry. And that’s another point the documentary makes, examining the patents various companies have filed, and what they claim marijuana-based drugs could one day be used to treat.

The video below is just an excerpt from the full documentary, which originally aired in Montana amid a debate about repealing that state’s medical marijuana law. The full, nearly hour-long film is available to watch online for free.

This video is from PBS.

Pot will only be partially decriminalized so that its sale and distribution can be controlled by Big Pharma.

  • Anonymous

Let’s see now. Marijuana is bad (According to most of our pols) so companies are right to fire people using it, even if a doctor prescribes it. Alcohol, caffein and tobacco are okay, even their more addictive.

40 per cent of the violent crimes are committed by people using alcohol. THis is more than any other substance. But that isn’t outlawed and neither should marijuana.

A variety of grapes has also been through testing and found to kill and or prevent growth of cancer cells. Very reputable universities did that testing. There is so much money in cancer that it may be more profitable to some to allow the disease to continue to ravage lives rather than lose profits.

cancer is the not the only disease perpetuated by big pharma.  alzheimer’s disease also appears to have an inexpensive and much more effective treatment in the drug Clioquinol, which has been taken off the market.  its said that Clioquinol caused neuropathy in patients, which is true, but with supplemental B12 there is no problem.  you can wait for Prana Pharmaceuticals to come out with PBT2, in a few more years, or you can get you Clioquinol now from a compounding chemist.  AD is a 168 billion dollar industry.  cancer is even more.  pharmaceutical companies want to cure disease the same way Lockheed wants a peaceful world…

he also believes that women should be forced to carry unwanted children even if that pregnancy is life threatening, or due to rape.
he also believes social security should be abolished, but has never put up a better idea to take care of the hundreds of thousands of fully paralized, autistic, or other such helpless people.

They learned their lesson with polio. Actually cured that sucker. And they never made a penny off of it (other than vaccines) again. LOTS more money in keeping people sick and taking pills for the rest of their lives.

I consider big pharma to be one of the most immoral industries on the planet. Their goal is to make money off of your suffering for the rest of your life. Meanwhile, they kill 200,000 of us in the average year. Cannabis kills no one, and even cures cancers.

Ask the gentleman in Montana who just helped his 2 year old son beat stage 4 brain cancer with it. The kid is now 3 and healthy and happy. The chemo was killing him. Or the man who was recently cured of leukemia within weeks of starting THC oil therapy. The medical community had written him off as dead, and now he is cancer free. Or read the Spanish studies that show that it does indeed kill cancerous tumors. In one man’s case, it killed off a tumor of over two POUNDS.

We don’t need to screw with it, just use it as nature gave it to us. It doesn’t need massive chemical alteration, it works the way it is. So someone gets a buzz off of it. If they are alive and their life is worth living again, isn’t that a small price for society to pay?

We need to get off this hypocritical nonsense about how Prozac, Valium, and the lot of THOSE are okay, but cannabis isn’t. GOD made cannabis, MAN makes those pills. Those pills KILL. Cannabis cures. Make your choice. Just don’t be doing any prescription drugs when you make it. Those things make people crazy.

That’s right, and he also wants to kill YOU!!!  He he….  No really, Ron Paul is correct in that there has to be major changes to SS and Medicare, or those programs will not last long into the future.  He says you should be able to opt out, and plan for your own retirement.  Is this what you’re talking about?  I know the idea that someone can be self-reliant is baffling to many of you, but it’s really an attractive option.  And pete’s sake, how dare someone defend a defenseless life??  He wants abortion to be handled at the state level, but he has said that he is personally appalled by abortion.  I am too!!  Sue me!!!

You know that Big Pharma has known about these herbal qualities since Day 1.
Making people sick and dying for profit is their mission.
Hemp is without peer, not only as medical gold, which should be enough, but also for its 20,000 other non-medical uses. A $1,000,000,000,000 industry that can help the US and the WORLD out of the current slump of insanity.
Gov Brown said he would sign the legalization bill for industrial hemp when it crosses his desk.

Voth is obviously one of the most selfish and unethical pharmaceutical shills on the planet.  Marijuana is one of the most “tested” substances in the history of mankind.  At the same time, most pharmaceutical medications have hideous and deadly side affects that kill people by the thousands yearly. Marijuana has never killed anyone. Yet this guy tries to affect disapproval of a number of different cannabinoids (with zero evidence for concerns) while pharmaceutical meds are filled with known toxins that kill and debilitate.   Pharmaceutical Painkillers destroy liver and kidneys and are addictive while marijuana does none of that.  Still Voth , the pharmaceuticals shill, completely neglects to mention it.

It is people like Voth protecting their income and shilling for big oppressive Big Pharma that are willing to do and say things that keep people suffering and dying and have set medicine back hundreds of years.  If this guy was my doctor, I would never ever return.  No way. What a complete and total piece of shit.  I’d bet the farm if he was suffering and he tried marijuana he would take it over that toxic garbage they want to force on people in a heartbeat.  People like Voth should be shunned and despised.

the purpose of government in my opinion is to take care of the things that are not profitable enough for the free market to deal with… such as taking care of the infirm.

opt out of SS? thats nice, except the people who need it truly, never put anything in to it usually, they are being paid for by the people who can.

and again, hes put forward no solution to take care of those folks… frequently they are abandoned, no family, no friends, no one to pay for them, and no ability to pay for themselves.. so yes, he wants to kill them, and thats sick.

but the real problem is the first statement, which you didn’t address. He denies evidence, he lies to himself, and to others, pretending the world is one way when its not. Any politician who refuses to face facts, and runs on a platform of ignorance is bliss… should be kept out of office. I want the people running the country SMARTER than me, not dumber than a box of rocks.

I would bet my life on the fact that Dr. Paul is much smarter than you.  Is evolution really the biggest problem in politics?  Give me a effing break.  Our economy is collapsing (which he predicted).  The Federal Reserve is getting ready to print off a couple trillion more dollars for a stimulus (which will inevitably cause the recession/depression to continue indefinitely).  We’re about to put ground troops in Libya (Ron Paul opposed this war from the very beginning, as well as every other war we’re in that’s bankrupting us).  If you want to pretend evolution is our biggest issue, then you go right ahead and do that.  You will get the economic collapse you’re not anticipating.  I hope you enjoy it.

If this Dr Voth is not a shill for Big Pharma, I’ll eat my keyboard. Call me cynical, but wouldn’t a real doctor (one not in the pocket of the Pharma Industry) want to try anything that is safe, by modern standards, in an attempt to alleviate a patient’s symptoms?  Yes, testing is a necessary thing, but Marijuana has been used, medicinally, for thousands of years and there is enough data to show it basically harmless to our internal organs and quickly metabolized.  To scoff at the usefulness and effectiveness of cannabinoids is just a stupid and uneducated posture.

Then you would probably have wasted your life. But that is aside the point, creationism vs evolution isnt the problem, its the result of a much bigger problem; Denying facts. Until there is a candidate that actually addresses the world as it is, not as some magical fantasy land where there is some benevolent big daddy in the sky who is going to make everything okay if we take a shit in our sandbox. Reality is not forgiving, we’ve had failure after failure in office on every level for the last century ruining our country, our world, and our culture. Ignorance is poison, and willful ignorance is malicious.

And honestly, most of these wars would not have happened if there was no ideological sky daddy we claim is telling us we should attack our neighbor. Whether were muslim, christian, jewish, mormon, or whatever other religion or socio-ideological stance of the month is on tap. All these people live in a fantasy land, and use that fantasy to exact horrible pain upon others of our tiny world. Ron paul is no different, he may not be for war, but his sadism will be self inflicted upon the american people, not the countries belonging to muslims or jews.

It will be legal once they can have strict control over making profits on it.

When they create a patent and make it  a prescription drug , sold exclusively by the Drug Empires at a price Most people can not afford , it  will be available.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJ4XRIA3A3E6MYGK755EGWLN4Q Dani A

You dont understand why? Here is why.
Billions of deaths over the centuries in the name of “God”.
Needless, wasted lives suffered for piety.
Willfull ignorance keeping the rest of the world from advancing in science and culture.
Peace destroyed because a tiny faction in a country decides their “god” is the only “god” that should be respected.
Ego and the loudest voice replacing reason.

Believe what you want, but when that belief impacts me, my friends, my family, my country… then that belief needs to go away. Every single war comes down to belief without a shred of evidence.

And since Ron Paul is just another one of these fools who believes and doesn’t think, he can stay the hell out of office.

You say he says the truth? he doesn’t know the truth, he only knows his religious fantasy and ignores the evidence before his very eyes.

    That is dangerous.

You are right about major changes to Medicare but not to SS.  Minor changes to SS will make it solvent for millennia.

Medicare & Medicaid however need to refocus on patient outcomes rather than treatments.  Ask yourself why there are 8 states delivering medicare for half the cost perperson of NY & FL with as good or better health outcomes?

The answer is that Hospitals are hooked on Medicare money and have ZERO incentive to save the Medicare system money.

Yes the ultimate answer is a single payer system or baring that regulation of insurance companies like utilities.  either way the profit motive needs to removed and or capped.

I assume you’re referring to the bill sponsored by Barney Frank which is being co-sponsored by Ron Paul, the difference being perhaps a minor quibble. Paul is a Republican but ideologically he is a libertarian acting pretty much the way one would expect a libertarian to act, and in total consistency with how Paul has dealt with similar matters in the past. This bill would not legalize marijuana, it would decriminalize it on the federal level. Furthermore, it would leave it up to the states to determine its legality. While such a bill would be a definite improvement on current legislation it still isn’t what is needed for what is a rather innocuous substance.

If one were to do an analysis of attitudes toward legalizing marijuana mapped to political ideology there would be a high correlation between the two, with the farther left one identified oneself correlating to a higher likelihood of positive attitudes toward legalization. I refer you to a Gallup Poll that addresses this particular point. I believe that if the poll had been less simplistic, if it had allowed for a greater range of ideological identification, the results would have been even more supportive of my thesis, with many who had identified themselves as conservatives  supporting legalization reidentifying themselves as libertarians, thereby reducing the number of conservatives who support legalization.

In all fairness, it’s hard to map out specifically where libertarianism resides on the left-right political spectrum. Many of us who post here, lefties though we are, find much of libertarianism that resonates with our core beliefs-Noam Chomsky is thought of as a left-libertarian-but we are opposed to much of the economic agenda of what is perceived by the masses as the only flavor of libertarianism; that we can not adhere to it. Therefore, although we agree with and enthusiastically support much of Paul’s agenda he can’t be a viable candidate.

Not everybody on the right nor on the left caters to special interests. You imperatively tell me to open my eyes but trust me, they’re not closed. They just see the world differently than you. I will afford you the right to perceive things the way you do, hopefully you will do the same for me. There is room for dialogue but only if we see each other as equals. Game?

To answer your question, none.  My disgust (disappointment is too tame a word) for Obama is based entirely on him, his actions and his inactions.  His first piece of legislation, the credit card “reform” bill, failed to cap interest rates at 30 per cent.  Fail is an appropriate word for his pathetic corporate pandering.  I tried to warn people but no one listened in their haste to annoint a bi-racial saviour.  Michelle gave up a $350,000 a year job at U of C to move to Washington.  When you’re already raking in that kind of money, skin color is irrelevant, the only color that matters is green.

  • Anonymous

Okay, I’ve sat by here and not said anything but I’m done with that for at least one post.

What you are talking about is NOT freedom, it’s abandonment. It’s being left to flap in the wind like a flag or a sail with no mast. You are espousing a system where anyone with more money than you can push you around however they want and unless you can cough up enough money for a lawyer, you have NO recourse. Yes, I know how it’s SUPPOSED to work, but it’s NOT that kind of a world. The world we live in has people that can and will take advantage of you at every opportunity. What you want is to let them, and to give yourself no one to stand up and even TRY to protect your rights. What good are rights when there is NO power behind them to make sure that someone bigger doesn’t screw you out of them?

This is NOT freedom. It’s like in my state, Colorado, a so called “Right to work” state. That doesn’t mean that you will GET a job, just that you have a right to work. For less than others in nearby states without such idiocy for policy. The right to work for NO benefits. The right to work with NO contracts or protections at all. SOME right. And the businesses have the right to screw you and pocket what they USED to share with you before these stupid laws were passed.

You look, if that IS your current picture, to be rather young. You have NO idea what you are asking for . You seem to believe in the “everyone can be trusted” nonsense that is supposed to be so prevalent on MY side of the aisle. What you need to learn is that there are people in this world who have more money than you will ever dream of. For the last 40 years, they have been on a concerted effort to rob you of your money, wages, power, and stability. They have been very successful, to the point where people like you don’t even see the nonsense of further dividing ourselves for the benefit of those very rich people . You are buying right into their divide and conquer game like it’s something that will EVER give you a fair chance at a life you would be happy to live. You are doing THEIR job.

Libertarianism works just fine if you already have more than you will ever need. Otherwise, it’s just a way to screw you out of even more than you can imagine. You’re slitting your own throat even thinking of being on the right in this country. If you aren’t in the top 2%, you are a complete fool for voting for ANY republican. Unless, of course, you LIKE being abandoned by those you pay to make sure you’re not just gamed as a cog in a wheel.

Does all that name calling make you feel better?  I have a job actually.  What have the police done for you recently?  All I hear about is how they repeatedly trample on people’s rights, arrest members of organizations that want to feed the homeless, shut down the lemonade stands of 8 year old girls, etc. etc.  I could definitely do without them.  They’ve never once protected me from anything.  My dad actually builds roads and bridges for a living and he’s not employeed by the government.  It is funded by taxpayers (not the government), but the actual service is performed by private industry.  Every government function if privitized would vastly improve.  It’s a fact.  When private industry struggles, they find a way to improve.  When public industry struggles, they throw more taxpayer money at the problem, and nothing improves.

I agree.  I feel like the regulations in place to protect the defenseless (animals, mentally disabled, children, etc.) are necessary.  Other than that, I don’t see a need for the government to try and manipulate the market.  It’s not really working out so well.  See the oil spill happened despite the regulations imposed on the oil industry (which I don’t really know a whole lot about, but accidents are always going to happen).  If our government respected property rights, then that land would’ve been protected by its owner.  Please do not think that I’m condoning the oil spill because I cried everytime I saw a picture of the oil soaked marine life.  I’m just saying our government has never been and will never be a good teacher of morality.

I take issue with any discussion of cannabis that does not include information on using an inhaler instead of “smoking dope” as that prig put it. Possession of an inhaler by itself constitutes a violation of criminal law because it’s paraphernalia, and yet it undermines the argument that using cannabis is unhealthy due to the tar and phenol, etc., that is emitted when the fiber is burnt.

    PBS=FAIL

Anytime you allow an enemy an opportunity to excuse their position you’ve failed your cause.

Please see my post above….I think regulations in place to protect the defenseless (animals, children, mentally handicapped, etc.) are warranted.  You can’t acutally believe that our government is the best way to deliver welfare to citizens.  About $.25 of every dollar reaches its intended recepient.  If you’re not aware, we have homeless people on the streets currently.  You will also notice a lot of private charitable organizations caring for them.  Do you think there’s any bureaucracy in delivering cans of food that have been donated to a food bank?  No, there isn’t.  Do you think there’s bureaucracy in delivering welfare through the government.  Very much!!!

I don’t know about most of the claims being made for marijuana one way or the other.  If it’s good it gets you high and if it’s very good it gets you damn high!   And if it’s excellent, you probably won’t be able to talk!  But no matter what else it might or might not do, the more you smoke,  the worse it is for your lungs.  I smoked pot–and hashish and opium whenever I could get them as well–for about 35 years all told and during that time, I did it like I do everything in my life, straight on!  And for most of that 35 years I woke up every damn day and spit up some of the ugliest shit that has come out of my mouth before or since–I mean big black globs of shit straight out of my lungs.  I never in my life smoked cigarettes so all that shit was from the pot!  I didn’t care too much at the time because I was getting high.  But when I stopped smoking pot I stopped spitting up all that black shit.

Now I am not doing to speculate about whether smoking pot might cause cancer or doesn’t cause cancer or cures cancer or even might cure cancer, I don’t know. And it doesn’t much matter, but not knowing too much about medicine I am still going to suggest that that black shit wasn’t good for me based on the fact that every damn morning my body rejected a whole lot of it.  And if it had been good for my lungs I don’t think they would have felt the need to cleanse themselves of it!  But that is just me.  The rest of you can go ahead and believe what ever you want about it.  But stop pretending that smoking marijuana doesn’t harm your lungs, at least while you are smoking it, my experience is that it must!

You can guarantee that this research will disappear into obscurity.

And I use hemp as an example. Look up the benefits of hemp to see how powerful companies and useless opponents are capable of squashing what would actually be a beneficial industry.

Peanut butter. I’m convinced that if you did a study, you would find that virtually 100% of your prison population had peanut butter as children, clearly establishing a direct causation, just like they have with cannabis and everything else.

Or maybe it’s ketchup. Mustard? Maybe it’s just condiments of all kinds. Maybe we should outlaw pickle relish just to be sure.

I love how the head of the DEA says we can’t legalize cannabis even for medical use, because people abuse prescription drugs. How’s THAT for a reason to ruin the lives of over 3/4 of a million Americans every year? When we’re being run by  THIS kind of intelligence, it’s no wonder the country’s gone to hell.

  • http://www.delawareliberal.net Joe Cass

blah blah blah, legalize it.Make it as customary as a wedding toast but your employer’s insurance company policy will ALWAYS prevent you from keeping your job while using. Yeah yeah yeah, even medical.

Broccoli has more cancer causing chemicals in it naturally than cannabis does. You need to do some research, Dr. There is PLENTY of legitimate research out there that shows just the opposite of what you have said here.

First, look at the structures of the plants themselves. Tobacco is a soil leeching plant. It is well known that it pulls heavy metals out of the dirt it’s planted in, things like mercury, chromium, cadmium, the list goes on. Many of these things are radioactive. Cannabis, OTOH, does not do this. It will not grow properly in such soil, and there are no additional pesticides needed in it’s production.

When you burn tobacco, those radioactive substances turn into polonium24, which has a half life of 27 years. Cannabis contains no such heavy metals or radioactive substances. All smoke is NOT the same, nor is cannabis smoke inhaled in NEARLY the quantities tobacco smoke is.

There has never been a legitimate study that has shown cannabis shortens one’s life at all, and in fact, US senate studies in 1970 and 1972 showed that those who smoke LARGE quantities still live longer than their next door neighbors who don’t.

And you might want to talk to the gentleman in Montana whose 2 year old son had stage 4 brain cancer, to have it cured by THC oil therapy. The chemo nearly killed him, and his doctors gave him the chance of either dying or being a vegetable for the rest of his life. his father started putting THC oil in the kid’s feeding tube and now that kid is a happy, healthy, cancer free kid of 3 1/2.

Or talk to the Spanish medical community who did a study and found that it indeed DOES cure brain tumors. You need to learn what the truth is, and stop letting them lie to you.

Someone has been feeding you BULLSHIT. Hallucinations? Get real. There is NO such thing going on, no matter HOW much you do. You CAN have hallucinations with alcohol, but NOT with cannabis. Sorry, you’re just showing off your lack of knowledge, here.

Besides, what difference does it make if you feel GOOD for a change? Most people who are chronically ill are also very depressed, and could USE something that makes them feel good. NONE of your prescriptions are supposed to do that, are they? Cannabis can help when you feel like shit, trust me. And that is JUST what the doctor ordered, until 1937 when the feds started putting them in jail for it.

Get over your fear of anyone feeling GOOD. It might even improve YOUR life.

Yeah, now Big Pharma is beginning to try to cash in.  Synthetics are never as good or better then the natural ingredient from the naturally grown plant.  coca leaves have curative powers yet the man made cocaine is more highly addictive then the natural plant itself.  Its all about money and forcing people to buckle under to unjust and inhuman laws just so some corporation can profit.  We cannot trust our government to respect our First Amendment rights or any of our rights given by our founding fathers.

  • Anonymous

You almost got it, they WANT people abusing prescription drugs, it directly benefits the people who put them in power via profits, thus benefiting them. They know they can’t make money when you grow your own. See what they did there?

I’m no expert Twitterati, WJM, so fact check what I’m going to say as I try to ‘splain the best I can since it’s been a couple hours and no one else has honored your request.

Along with the topic in those tweets at the end of the article there is a (usually  shortened) link to this article, so “followers” of a certain tweeter can find their way to this page.  Sort of like a mailing list on a micro scale, a tweeter tweets something and everyone who subscribes to that tweeter’s feed gets it. Some re-tweet so their followers can have a chance to check it out as well, just as some folks forward emails to other people who were not the original recipient in order to share the content. Since it is limited to 140 characters, a tweet is like a miniscule blog post, hence the appellation “micro-blogging”.

If you had an account at Twitter and tweeted about this article, your tweet would be added to your page at Twitter, and also show up on the pages of folks who were your followers, and your tweet would be in that list at the end of the article as well (in this case, for this site – not all sites have THAT feature). So it’s a nice, easy way to share links, pix and info without having to log-in to an email account or add a post to a full blown blog engine.

Morality does not creep into the boardroom in most multinational corporations.  Greed is the way of the CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, hey, any C-level exec.  Money is the thing.  Morals are for losers.

Well, you don’t have to smoke pot to enjoy its benefits.  Many patients actually EAT it.  No need to destroy your lungs if you can’t afford a decent vaporizer, you can just make some “Jah butter” by soaking your weed in butter in a crock pot over night on low.  This is how a friend who survived cancer got through her ordeal with pain and discomfort.  She used pot to help her get through it.  She is alive to this day.

Well your wrong, I have smoked both for 38 years. My doctor is always amazed at how many patients he sees besides me that have smoked both for decades and have little to zero problems. How do you explain that? Maybe you had inferior product to smoke. Do I cough up a little black shit every so often, yes but so what. I can’t go run a marathon and depending on where you work you will spit up crap. Everyone’s body deals with things in different ways and your seemed to reject what it didn’t like which is probably a good thing. There is no proof that Cannabis is harmful and I have seen a study that says smoking it may help keep cancer from affecting the upper body. For you it was probably the opium, that is nasty shit, there’s your black shit problem. Lot’s of research everywhere but here, even our Government found out that cannabis has great cancer killing abilities along with dealing with tumors, they found out in 1974 but swept it under the drug and asked the Medical College in Virginia to lose the results. If you look you can find copies of the report, and the US Government has a patent on chemical’s and compounds in cannabis with descriptions of uses and benefits. If it’s so dangerous and it’s poison then why did they patent anything do do with cannabis or sweep very positive results under the table.

  • Sick of everything

Pharma companies have no desire to help this situation since they won’t make any money off of a plant that anyone can grow and besides you can’t patent a plant.

I did have a perfect score of 100 in my high school civics class but things have changed so much since then, I doubt I’d recognize today’s legislative process. You can make excuses for Obama all you like, but he was able to strongarm Kucinich and Franken into voting for the bush tax cut extensions. Why couldn’t he do the same thing when he had a majority in both bodies of Congress to reduce interest rates to acceptable and humane levels?

To put things in perspective, here’s a bit of dialogue from the 1976 movie Fun With Dick And Jane:

If you smoked tobacco that long and were spitting up black “sh!t,” you’d be dead by now b/c tobacco has more, and worse, carcinogens.

While pot has carcinogens, as I understand some of the new research, the cannabinoids are simultaneously inhibiting cancerous growth.

In fact, there was a recent write up on the National Cancer Institute’s website, cancer.gov, that said the following until it was scrubbed, and replaced with watered down gov-speak, by the powers that be:

“The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect.”

    Cool stuff.

I agree that smoking pot or cigarettes is a very individual and unique experience for each person.

My girlfriend speeds on some pain killers (downers). Even though MM works for insomnia for most, including me, my grandson smokes daily and can’t sleep.

I smoked cigarettes for 45 years and have smoked pot for 50 years. While smoking cigs I would cough up brown sputum. When I stopped the cigs but continued smoking pot I did not. My lungs are clear, no spots or tumors and my breathing is good.

Why is it that, in relatively similar environments, some cigarette smokers get lung cancer and some don’t? Because a Sick said, ” Everyone’s body deals with things in different ways…”

It isn’t the cancer-killing properties of marijuana. It IS the cancer-killing properties of cannabis.

If the SCOTUS delivered an honest service, then ‘marihuana’ would be declared a racist,
unconstitutional 104 word tautology. As long as they don’t, then marijuana is ‘precious’.

When the precious 41 year old tautology is unwound, it becomes clear that term ‘marijuana’
    means cannabis smoke.

Here is the ‘precise’ definition of marijuana which actually shows respect for our Constitution:

    16. The term ‘marijuana’ means all parts
of the smoke produced by the combustion
of the plant Cannabis sativa L.

Demand it to the judge at Voir Dire. We can do this. Yes we can.

The zombies need to know that it was a wildly used plant that was legal for all human history outside of the last 70 + years and in that 70 years we’ve done nothing but fall apart, but hey, let’s all drink to that since it’s about all we can do with the nanny’s permission, lol.

Seems they just refuse to put two and two together.

Informed?  How’s this for informed?  Libertarianism would reduce the political power to the local level where any corporation could take command of a region by bribing officials or, even better, simply by being the largest employer in the area.  The smaller the political entity, the more easily it is to corrupt.  Hard to get the local sheriff to do anything about the company spewing crap into the local stream if he’s on their payroll.  Though he might well shoot anyone who complains.  Doubt it?  Research the Gilded Age and the behavior of the railroads during the latter part of the 19th Century.  I, for one, don’t want to go back to those days and you don’t either.  You just THINK you do because you’ve been listening to those who’d love to increase their profit margin at your expense, millionaires who want to deny your kids an education and put them to work instead.

The federal government certainly isn’t perfect, and can certainly be corrupted.  But it’s a heck of a lot easier to determine where the corruption comes from on the federal level.  Corporate lobbyists.  The very kind of people who’d simply sneak through the back door and spread their poison in utter silence if not for the bureaucracy of the federal government.

Besides, let’s not pretend Mr. Paul has ANY interest in freedom, when he’s just another would-be theocrat wrapping himself in the flag and pretending to give a damn about the Constitution so he can strip protections away from women, minorities, disabled people, and a whole host of others who aren’t white Christian men.  Ron Paul is full of noxious feces and so is anyone who’d buy into his tiny government snake oil.

Republicans and Libertarians are simply to sides of the same blindfolded coin–the ones who’d hand us over to the fat cats and walk away smiling with their 30 pieces of silver jingling in their pockets.  You may be able to sucker the ignorant, but not anyone with two clues to rub together.

    But thanks for playing.

I think we need major reform on many levels starting with the core of our mind sets all the way to how legislation is developed. Yeah, like that’s about to happen.

Property is theft! To patent an existing weed is going to be very difficult – impossible, a theft in all reality. Plus smoking it may not be the most efficacious means – chances are a high grade oil made from the resin is the way. That process of extraction might be patented – and there maybe control of the quantity required to accumulate a significant amount for resin extraction – my understanding 1lb of top grade indica yields about 2 oz of resin – quite how much is needed for treatment is unknown. This sad tale is full of insight -

He is a noise maker, and that’s why every facet of our Federal government and media hates him.  He has tremendous support actually, and his message is growing in popularity by the day….it’s spreading like wildfire.  Why do you think I sit and argue with everyone here?  I am passionate about Ron Paul, his message, and believe it or not….YOUR future.  I feel I have a personal responsibility (I know you libs don’t like that term) to inform others.

I never stated that he is anti-american or corporate owned…..quite the contrary.  Again, why don’t you go check out campaign contributions, and let me know who’s corporate owned.  Um yeah, that’d be everyone EXCEPT Ron Paul.  He will not get a dime from any corporation because they know he would never give them a dime of corporate welfare.

Maybe the push to decriminalize marijuana just came about, because our economy is worse than it’s ever been.  Maybe he’s aware that the war on drugs is nothing but a leech on society.  Ironically enough, two extremes of the population support the war on drugs.  They are extreme right-wing Christians and drug dealers.  Which do you represent?   The boost to our economy that would result from abandoning the war on drugs is huge.  Over half of this country’s prison population is made up of nonviolent, low level drug offenders.  The cost to inprison these people who have caused no harm to anyone else is estimated at $60,000/person/year.  Also, most of the budget for police forces is wasted on what?  That’s right….the war on drugs.

You know nothing of my life.  My father is a high school drop out, who through hard work and a belief in personal responsiblity, has made a success of himself.  When my father, brother and I were abandoned by my mother, it would’ve been very easy for him to accept some form of government assistance, and I’m sure people like you would have supported him in that decision.  But my father would never have done that.  See if anything, I should hate the concept of personal responsiblity, because in effect, it made me an orphan…..I never saw my father because he worked constantly.  I do not hate it though.  I understand that without it, there would a further burden on society, and less taxpaying citizens.

Do you understand that government does not have one penny?  They take that money from someone or even worse print it out of thin air (please see the actions of our Federal Reserve).

  • Anonymous

You are naive, like a child.  What makes you think that our government has more morals than any business?  Also, businesses are subject to laws if they commit a crime, so even if they wanted to be immoral (which they don’t because they’d like to keep customers) at least they are kept in check.  Can we say this about our Federal Reserve?  No, they are never even questioned when they dispense trillions of dollars (that they print out of thin air) to foreign banks or Wall Street.  They steal for you and I every single day when they increase our monetary supply.  When will these people be brought to justice?  That’s right…they won’t…and instead our currency will be worthless after a couple more bailouts or stimuli.  Who needs some morals?  Get outta here……

  • Anonymous

Oh, I’d love to get into a debate about the economy.  This is my expertise.  Regulations are enacted by our government to limit competition, and prop up its players.  Regulations are barriers to enter the market, and burdens (especially to smaller companies) to stay in the market.  Anti trust laws prohibit monopolistic situations, and therefore encourage competition.  You can try to manipulate the words here, but you’re not fooling anyone with an understanding of economic principles.

  • Anonymous

That’s just ridiculous, and I believe you are smart enough to understand that.  You think our government provides oversight.  Give me a break.  Oversight by taking 75% of what is intended for the “less fortunate.”  Why do you presume I’ve not been involved in food banks.  You know nothing about me.  I have donated many times to food banks.  I also volunteer at my local animal shelter, and I walk dogs who may or may not be put to sleep the next day.  I do this even though I leave depressed and on the verge of tears everytime I go.

considering the fact the our intelligence agency has been repeatedly caught shipping in the drugs, the last thing they would want to do is cut off an off the books source of income. our soldiers are protecting the poppy fields of the source (Afghanistan) of 90% of the worlds opium, right now, as i type, and our borders have been wide open for how long? not to mention the other issues, like the entire ‘police state’ apparatus that has been built around us was paid for by the prohibitive nature of the unconstitutional laws that we are forced to live under. all prohibition does is create a lucrative black market as it drives the prices way up, provides a new class of ‘criminal’, the user,  with which a cop must be needed to catch them and a prison must be built to house them (government jobs/growth). It forces people into more dangerous pharmaceuticals enriching the drug companies, protects cotton farmers from hemp competition, protects the logging industry somewhat, as hemp makes better paper and reduces the rate of deforestation, the tobacco farmers don’t want legal cannabis because less people will smoke cigarettes.  But to get down to BRASS TACKS…….. Our bodies are our own, and if I choose to drink raw milk, or smoke a bowl…. I WILL. It is my right.

We have been told all our lives that this and that is bad for you and don’t eat it or drink it. If you do this you will die early and so on. I’m in my early 50′s and I don’t ever remember a high school or college athlete just up and dying on the court or on the field, now this happens a lot. George Burns smoked and drank and chased women and he was what 90 or a 100 before he passed. There are groups of people around the country in clubs that celebrate being over a 100 years old and still going. You talk to these old dudes and they will tell you they ate a pound a bacon, fried potatoes, 6 eggs everyday, plus smoked straights and drank whiskey all their life. Pretty much everything we were told to stay away from, besides that extra ten-twenty years they tell you that you will gain, think about what that will be like. Doctors, stuff don’t work right, etc. So is it worth the extra time, don’t know.

Or any other body part book, that’s friggen hilarious. Look how many people get in trouble because of putting their life out there for everyone to see, then bitch because something happens because of it. Lawyers looking for dirt on soon to be ex-spouse, employers snooping on present and future new hires and on and on. It is pretty funny to see so many people end their careers because of something so retarded as using social media to pass info around and then oops everybody see’s it now. Stupid morons. Look at Rep. Weiner, he didn’t even break the law and ended his career. Of course it depends on who you know or who you are. David Vitter got busted buying sex which is illegal and he still has a job, what a system we have.

  • Sick of everything

Funny how that works. I like RP but he does have some issue’s that would keep me from voting for him, one of the main one’s is he want’s everything deregulated and self policing. That does not work and it floors me that he suggested it. Gary Johnson want’s it legal too but his views are a little more in line with what’s needed now. But for the most part the GOP has nothing on their side, thank god.

Well ya it’s tax dollars. I agree the less Government involvement the better, but the Government does serve a purpose in helping keep the nation going, it makes me nut’s to hear people saying we need the Government out totally. That’s retarded and just plain stupid. Yes the Government has money, but not for long. Just like the rest of us our money comes in and turns right around and goes out to pay bills. The problem is we need more revenue, several million jobs would help, and stopping the breaks to the rich. And right now the Government could play a huge roll in getting the economy going again, but thanks to the useless a-holes on the right including the GOP/Tea Party it will be tough. Going to have to spend money like it or not until things improve then we can start serious deficit reduction, nothing will work until the GOP decides to help the people and nation instead of themselves and their rich buddies, and hey maybe just do their damn job.

Name that free market that existed a “very long time” ago.

There is no such thing as a free market and there never has been one, Adam Smith, the author of The Wealth of Nations (1776) remarked in the 1780s that slavery could more easily be abolished under a despotic government than a free representational government controlled by white slave owners since under those conditions “every law is made by their masters.”

LOL!!!  I’m very grateful for my upbringing.  It taught me to be a decent, hard-working, taxpaying individual, which I’m sure you’re not.  The fact that you try to exploit something like that speaks to what kind of person you are.  I’m not angry at anyone.  I’m not trying to take anything out on anyone.  I would like to help wake the citizens of this country up.  You would like for them to remain asleep.

Let me guess, you are an unemployeed, hopeless member of society who realizes that you will never be able to attain success on your own, therefore you’d like to leech off of people who can be successful in life despite whatever obstacles they had to overcome (me).  So noone ever told you that you could be a sucess, well I believe you can.  I hope that you’ll have the chance to do that despite our economy becoming more socialistic every single day.

How the hell do you suppose we’d do away with prisons?  People do committ murders, rapes, child molestation, etc.  I think these people should be in prison…not people who smoke marijuana. The fact that you can’t see the link between our collapsing economy and the drain the war on drugs represent proves that you are blind to reality.

Ever thought about adoption??  There are tons of families who are not fortunate enough to have children on their own that would love to have a baby.  I know someone like you could never fathom such an idea because you would be admitting that someone else is better equipped to raise a child than yourself.  So when the abortion is performed on a full-term infant, when it could’ve been delivered and given to a family that would love and cherish it, how do you justify that?  You should not pretend to care about chilren or anyone but yourself, because everything that you right proves that you are nothing but a selfish, disgusting excuse for a human being.

Well, I don’t care to read your full post, because I know from the first two sentences that you are delusional.  If you actually think that a larger, more centralized government leads to anything other than stifling creative thought and an increase in corruption, then you should go do some research.  When the ideas of one group are allowed to dominate through granting power to one large decision making body, i.e., the federal goverment, and they decide what’s right and wrong, it leads to disaster.    I’d prefer that power be given to states, so at least we could have “50 laboratories of innovation.”  We could learn which practices are best, and which should be done away with.  I’m sure you experience everyday that people around you are performing tasks on a level far superior to you.  Then you are able to learn from these people.  But if you alone were in power, then we’d all suffer from the consequences of that tragedy.  You get it??

I can’t believe you actually watched it!!  That’s right, the CIA isn’t a part of our military, just like foreign policy isn’t a part of our economy.  Keep those blinders on!!!!!!

Don’t believe this shit Pagasae is posting.  He’s clearly being paid by the global elite to ensure that freedom is not allowed to have a place in American society again.  If you do the research on your own, you’ll discover the truth.

Haha mersh! Never heard of it but I don’t get out much. Yeah, it may have been some crap that was sprayed because whoever smoked the shit got a lung desease and coughed for weeks. God bless prohibition.

ok you have convinced me with your emotional appeal.  i will now vote for whomever you tell me to.

  • Sick of everything

I don’t care what Party it is, I want someone that will do the job. Unfortunately the Pres only has so much individual power and has to have cooperation to get anything done.

  • Sick of everything

Did I say that?? No it’s a sad fact. Our country is already in trouble and if the nut’s in the Tea Party and the GOP have their way we are doomed.

  • Sick of everything

You need to do some research of your own and stop watching Fox noise. I can’t believe your so naive. It’s not a spending issue, your listening to the idiots that are the cause of this mess. Jesus why don’t people do their own fact checking and research, it just makes you look stupid and uninformed. Every top economist says the same thing, we CAN NOT cut our way out, we have to spend some money to get things going. Spending always goes up in a recession it has to. Our revenue is lower now then since the 50′s, all the very wealthy have gotten that way because of all the breaks their lobbyist have gotten for them, good god you don’t already know this?? No one has said raising tax revenue alone would do it, but it has to be part of the plan you can’t balance the budget on the backs of the middle and lower class. Everybody in this nation is having to go without and cut back, so why can’t the richest people and corporations who have had nothing but record profits pay their fair share and stop getting all the priviledges they have gotten that made them as wealthy as they are now. It’s time to give back to the nation that helped them get where they are today. These ass-holes have gotten very rich off of us, these top 1 or 2% while the rest of the country has slid backwards. You sound like that jackass Paul Ryan or even the other jackass Cantor. It’s funny, all of you right wings stupid asses keep saying it’s Obama’s fault, but of course if you idiots would do a little homework you would see that your buddy Bush was at about 5 trillion and the Pres now is at about 1.5 trillion, I’m pretty sure 1.5 is a lot less then 5. You all have short term memory loss or ignorance one of the two or both. I can’t even believe I wasted this much time explaining any of this since it’s out there look it up. This is what happens when someone gets thrown into a complete clusterfuck started by someone else and is expected to clean it up in a year or two even though it took the jackass who caused all this about eight years, jeez pull your head out.

20 hours ago you claimed twice that I was being paid to post here.  Now you claim I am unemployed.  Which is it?  I only wish our economy was becoming socialistic, unfortunately it is not.  But I don’t think you know what the word socialistic means.  We already have the technology to do away with prisons.  It really would be quite simple if we decided to do that instead of keep thinking that prisons are necessary for the bad guys, as you do.  End the use of prisons and you won’t be putting people in prison for smoking marijuana will you?

Here is why the whole Ron Paul wants to end the war on drugs meme is meaningless.  In the first place the DEA doesn’t get involved with drug busts unless the drugs are carried across state lines, that is transported.  All states have their own drug laws, and since Ron Paul is a state’s rights person he won’t be doing anything on that account.  Since all people in jail for smoking marijuana are in state prisons not federal prisons, the states will still be arresting people for marijuana use all over the country and they will still be going to state prisons for breaking state laws just as they are now.  But Ron Paul is probably counting on most people not really understanding how his states rights position actually is in direct conflict with his claim that he will end the war on drugs and people won’t be going to jail anymore for smoking marijuana.

That’s what I am talking about, you need to think more and stop accepting everything the fool says, he is playing you and all the rest of the people who fall for his liberty and freedom crap!  Think about it for awhile.

I thought it wasn’t about party.  I never claimed that George Bush was a good president….he was absolutely horrible as a matter of fact.  Our single system of “republicrats” both offer the exact same thing.  You seem to have some understanding of how things work because you mention lobbyists.  You’re correct about that, and there are businesses that get rich that way, and it’s absolutely disgusting.  But you have to see that not all businesses lobby the government for handouts or special treatment.  We should not punish all for the actions of a few.  You also have to realize the mischeif of the Federal Reserve.  They print money and hand it out to Wall Street, and they bail out struggling “too big to fail” companies, and the taxpayers get the bill.  It’s a horrible criminal system, that only one politician will tell us about….Ron Paul.  We’re in trouble, and at the very least, people who care enough to educate themselves (you), need to get their hands on the right information.

I think you are unemployed, but that you have sold your soul to the global elite, and are being paid a small amount to ensure freedom does not find its way back into American society.  OK!?  How the hell would privitization of prisons lead to an increase in the prison population.  Your agruments, while well thought out, do not make sense.  Are they arresting people for the way they operate the prison??  You’re not going to fool me if that’s what you’re trying to do.  I guess there’s a chance that you might influence someone else, but I doubt it…..

Former judge sentenced to prison for “kids for cash” scheme

    By Dave Warner

    PHILADELPHIA |
    Thu Aug 11, 2011 5:26pm EDT

    PHILADELPHIA
(Reuters) – A former Pennsylvania juvenile court judge was sentenced on
Thursday to 28 years in prison for accepting payment to send juveniles
to a for-profit detention facility in a scandal dubbed “kids for cash,”.

    Former Luzerne County Juvenile
Court Judge Mark Ciavarella, 61, accepted nearly $1 million from a
developer who built the detention facility, prosecutors said.
    Under
the “kids for cash” scheme, thousands of juveniles were shipped to the
private center on minor or questionable charges by Ciavarella and
another former judge, Michael Conahan, according to juvenile advocates.
    “Mr.
Ciavarella abused his position of trust and inflicted a deep and
lasting wound on the community he vowed to service,” U.S. Attorney Peter
    Smith said following the sentencing.
    “The
scheme involved a corrupt agreement with the operators of the
for-profit juvenile facilities,” Smith said. “It was a wholesale
arrangement in which the judges concealed their interest and thereby did
    great damage to the public.”
The U.S. Attorney’s office called the case the “largest and most sustained political corruption inquiry” in the area.
Ciavarella was convicted in February of 12 charges, including racketeering conspiracy and money laundering.
    During
the trial, Ciavarella testified that the money he received from Robert
Mericle, the facility’s developer, amounted to “finder fees” and had no
connection to the fact that he was a sentencing judge.

I really don’t have time to research all this crap, but can you tell me how it’s possible to make a profit off of prison?  I’m definitely not gonna take your word for it, but I’m waiting for you to tell me something that makes sense.  Supporting prisoners costs money, and it’s not like they are doing anything productive in prison to earn their keep.  Therefore, the only way to pay for them is with tax dollars.  So unless these “privately-owned” prisons you speak of have somehow found a way to make money by supporting unproductive prisoners, I’m not buying it.  What makes the most sense if these prisons are indeed “privately-owned” is that they are corrupt people working hand in hand with the government, or defrauding the government in some way.  But if/when that’s the case, then we all know who’s fault it ultimately is…..the goverment.  Why are we going in circles here?  I’m the one who said that Paul wanted to end the war on drugs, thus eliminating over half the prison population and the minorities you claim he hates.  I know it must be exhausting trying to attack a man with such pure intentions. FYI, you’re not going to sway one single person away from Dr. Paul.  I guarantee you that anyone who has an understanding of this man, will never cease to support him.

Oops!  I hit “like” instead of “reply.”  D’oh!

Are you for real?!  You think any corporation would get into the prison business if they couldn’t turn a profit?  What would be their motive for doing so?

Corporations are pretty much required to at least TRY to make a profit, so there’s no reason any corporation would get into this field if it were impossible to make a profit.  The GEO Group, for example, had a net income of $58.9 million in 2008, and their CEO made $7 million in 2009 (more than 19 times the salary of the TDCJ director).  Granted, it’s not as profitable as an oil company, but it’s certainly a lot of money and they can afford to pay their execs obscenely high salaries!

And how do you think private prisons maximize their profits while still being able to pay exorbitant salaries to their execs?  By having fewer lower-level staff members, by paying them less, by providing crappier benefits, by employing less-qualified staff, by refusing to accept high-cost inmates (those with medical and/or mental health issues), by spending less on their inmates’ food, medical care, etc.

And, yes, it is a conspiracy between elected officials and their buddies in the private sector.  How do people get elected in this country?  By promising to enact business-friendly legislation and award lucrative contracts to huge corporations, who then give them now-unlimited (thanks to the Citizens United decision) amounts of money, which funds their campaigns.  You must either be seven years old or from another country.
