Romney says he’s part of the middle class

Millionaire Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he was seeking better tax policies for people in the middle class like himself.

“I think it’s a real problem when you have half of Americans — almost half of Americans that are not paying income tax,” the candidate told a group of supporters at a town hall event in Florida. “My own view with regards to tax policy is that we ought to provide help to the people that have been hurt most by the Obama economy, and that’s the middle class.”

“It’s not those at the low end and it’s certainly not for those at the very high end. It’s for the great middle class, the 80 to 90 percent of us in this country.”

Earlier at the same event, he had promised not to pander or be “phony.”

In June, Romney told another group of unemployed Floridians that he was “also unemployed.”

The former Massachusetts governor has a net worth estimated at up to $250 million. Earlier this month, a supporter in Tampa thanked him for creating jobs by quadrupling the size of his $12 million California beachfront mansion.

Romney and his wife Ann also own homes in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts. They recently sold two other homes in Belmont, Massachusetts and near Park City, Utah for about $8.75 million.

Rummy wants a middle class tax break?  Next he’ll file for unemployment benefits – and if given the chance would vote against them.

    Fuck you!

These people live in a fantasy world.  How much smoke do you suppose is blown up Romney’s ass every day?  Probably about half of what’s being blown up Perry’s.

Since Mitt and I are both “middle class,” I’m sure he’d have no problem if we pooled our net worth and split it 50/50.

    Mitt Romney.

Will some one please give this ass hole an Enema?

The reason half the population doesn’t pay income taxes is because they don’t earn enough!!!

The real money is going to assholes like Romney, who think they’re overburdened with taxes.  This dickhead doesn’t have a job so we know he’s making all his money on capital gains, which is taxed at 15%.  Poor son of a bitch really needs a break.

I guess Mitt considers himslef middle class because he is not the Forbes 400.

He’s right, Romney’s unemployed so he has a lot in common with people in the Middle Class, struggling to look for a job while living off their savings.

I tried to listen, I really did, but I can’t manage to listen past a Saint Reagan reference.
    Did Mitt Romney say something?
    Didn’t think so.

Fun campaign factoid: Romney’s middle name is actually “Shameless.”

  • Anonymous

Romney is spouting GOP crap.  The middle class is in desperate shape because of the GOP and tea party, not because of Mr. Obama.  Romney is patently NOT middle class, given his wealth.  If he really wants to help, he should work in Congress to close tax loop holes, cuts for millionaire – such as himself – and making corporations pay their fair share.  Until then, he is just another GOP shill.

  • Joseph Schweigert

So he’s pissed that 50% of Americans don’t pay taxes, then goes on to say that he wants to help 80-90% of Americans who are in the middle class. Um, I’m sorry, but that math does not match up. Do any of his supporters actually listen to what he says? Or are they just all like “Oh, he has a trustworthy face, I’m voting for him!”

    1. The thumbnail for the video is priceless with the woman in the back seemingly going “Are you fucking kidding me?!”
    2. Romney and the GOP think that Wal-Mart is a “small business”
    3. The 2012 Presidential race is going to be fun since he’ll most likely be the nominee (according to recent polls)

Funny he repeated the verbage of the classic liberal politician pandering to the ‘middle class’ and now everyone on this site is outraged by the identical rhetoric they normally love.. . . .because he’s ‘rich.’
John Kerry’s net worth is over 10x’s Romney’s and not one liberal criticized that when he ran.
Kerry had one of his 20 million dollar mansions shipped here from France on barges, yet no criticism from rawstory readers.
Kerry has one mansion worth 42 million, and 11 others around the world, yet no criticism.

    Classic hipocracy.

Just another example of Fascist mentality.  Fascists ALWAYS want SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.  He feels overburdened because he wants something for nothing.  They want profits, they want capital gains, but they don’t want to give back to the world in return for their riches.  There is NO such reality as something for nothing, except in the fascist mindset.  They want to deregulate and privatize EVERYTHING because they want something for nothing.  They NEVER want to pay a living wage because they want something for nothing.  They offshore jobs to places where people will work for next to nothing because they’re THAT desperate.  Fascists KNOW this and so they will always be sure to bribe those in power overseas that they know are easily corruptible because that those in power want to live an opulent lifestyle similar to the ones they believe American and European wealthy people live.  Fascists have no compunctions about hiring thugs and mercenaries to murder, torture, disappear, and politically imprison and oppress anyone who attempts to organize in these third world shit-pots for a chance at a better life for themselves and their families.  Then they corrupt our own political system to “legally” ensure that it all stays on the up and up in our eyes.  They even corrupt the American population into believing that they also should get something for nothing.  Nobody wants to pay the $10 that a hammer is actually worth, they want a $0.99 hammer.  The hammer’s going to last you the rest of your life, are you serious?  Nobody wants to pay that nice kid up the street who’s saving for college to mow their lawn, because a Guatemalan or Mexican they found at Home Depot will do it for $20 and a 6-pack.  We live in one of the most tax-friendly countries on the planet (if you take an active interest in it), yet Americans cry about paying taxes.  I don’t want to pay taxes, but I don’t want my tires ruined by a pot-hole either.  Yet, these Fascists have deliberately skewed the system so that the Feds get more than the State, and that’s WRONG.  YES, we do kind of over pay.  Not to mention, that we shouldn’t even have to file because they already took it before you got your hands on it.  But I still want to pay my fair share.  Fascists have no problem getting subsidized for their companies to make weapons and cater to the Pentagon system, but they have a big problem with the government “getting in the way.”  They’re getting a free ride with no risk on taxpayer money, and they think the government is getting in the way?  Oh yeah, that’s right… The want something for nothing.  This goes across the board from the very top to the very bottom.  WE ARE GUILTY TOO…

But the Fascist Mitt Romney (and he KNOWS he is one people, whether you want to believe it or not.. get the fuckin’ swastikas out of your head, those are Nazis, who work FOR Fascists who are themselves the army of the oligarchy class), is anything BUT middle class.

But hey… I guess all you have to do is say you’re a Christian, mention the founding fathers here and there, and throw in a bit of anti-liberal rhetoric, and you’ve got the fat old folks’ vote.

Not to be a dick, and I know I’m kinda blanketing some shit here, but you get my point.

  • samhoustonTX

Mitt has a hard time connecting to reality.  Did his sons — The Fightin’ Romneys — make an appearance?  There is still time for them to enlist and get some real fighting experience in Afghanistan.

  • kiboshki

Mitt, the half of Americans not paying federal income taxes are not doing so mainly because they’re too poor; and/or own a home; and/or have a family.   Moreover, they all pay FICA, which takes a vastly bigger chunk of their paycheck than it takes from yours, Mitt.   They are ALL also paying state and local taxes, on top of all the tax-like sums paid to private interests for “services” like cellphone mystery charges, ATM fees, and predatory loans.

No matter how much you spin it, the deadbeats in America are NOT the lower 50% who “don’t pay taxes”.  The deadbeats in America are NOT the middle class, either.

The deadbeats in America, Mitt, are You.

  • Anonymous

Mitt has a point (besides on the top of his head). Nothing says middle class like having a father who was the Governor of Michigan, ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1968, was the president of American Motors, was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and whose salary at American Motors was equivalent to $2 million a year in 2011 dollars. Like many Republicans in Congress today he barely was able to get by. Mitt, by his own admission, is unemployed and rapidly burning through his nest egg of $250 million dollars. Yet he holds tenaciously on with unflinching grasp to the bottom rung of the somiddle class and may yet prevail. We’re all rooting for you, Mitt! On a more technical level, what constitutes the upper class in his mind?

These folksy touches he applies to his campaign will alienate him more completely with the Republican base who perceive him as a liberal who will do anything (anything? (anything!!!)) to get nominated than his Mormonism which many think of as the 19th century’s attempt to invent Scientology.

Half the population doesn’t make enough to pay income tax, but the concern is for 5% of the population (that have 90% of the wealth) having to pay 3 or 4% more.  It seems to be a disproportional amount of people concerned for the very small portion of people with most of the wealth, which doesn’t make sense.

  • Anonymous

sorry, but your numbers on John Kerry are very inaccurate……….would you mind submitting your sources?………or easier just to go along with what you hear from right fringe sources that don’t bother to check their own facts? besides, you show me where John Kerry offered up that he was “like the rest of us” financially or acted like he was in the unemployment line.

  • Anonymous

Romney and the rest of the greed party are full of sh*t.

Based on the 2010 census there are ~75M aged 0-17.  There are ~190M aged 18-64.  There are ~ 40M over 65.  Prior to the so called great recession there were ~ 140M employed annually.  Many people over 65 and unemployed under 65 are withdrawing from traditional IRAs and paying taxes on those withdrawls.

It’s there policies that have created massive unemployment and created any taxpayer imbalance that might appear to exist in the population at large.

Stand by for an ironic twist to Reagan’s “if it moves tax it”.  In order to get up to 50 50 taxpayers with the current demographics  the greed party would have to adopt “if it breaths tax it”.

typical, a “conservative” says something entirely ignorant (not uncommon at all these days) and get called out on it………….then their sheep gather up to change the subject and history in defense of their “leader”. this change of subject usually entails MASSIVE amounts of misinformation, or outright “lies of frustration” that they have to continuously defend these ignorant, inaccurate remarks/comments made by the people that they wish to vote for. getting way too amusing to not play with them from time to time.

I like how the republicans always place their faults on others the Stormin’ Mormon talks about people voting to give themselves money from the treasury is exactly what the rich have been doing for 40 years and yes they are destroying America. The GOP talking point that 50% of us do not pay taxes is a bald faced lie, it’s more like 38% that do not pay federal taxes but they have to pay other taxes.  If you consider Social Security a tax then the number drops even lower, and considering they keep stealing money out of SS to pay for other things (like Bush2 using it so his deficits didn’t look so bad) well it is a tax and the rich only have to pay SS tax on the first 100k of income.

And Kerry is content to close loopholes and raise taxes on himself while Romney pretends he doesn’t have any wealth so he can pretend it’s evil to raise taxes.

“It’s not those at the low end and it’s certainly not for those at the
very high end. It’s for the great middle class, the 80 to 90 percent of
    us in this country.”

Rarely it happens (and I am no fan of Mr. Mittens), but Edwards is a bit off on the point that Romney was making.  I think he actually was referring to himself as on of the people in this country, not part of the 80 to 90 percent.

However, it is more interesting that he said that the poor aren’t suffering under the current economic state.  I guess he thinks that they are just doing dandy.  He also wants to call the the current economic state the “Obama Economy”, like everything was wonderful until two and a half years ago.  In other words he either feels that the American public either has Attention Deficit Disorder or they are just plain stupid.

Edwards does make another point when he states, “a supporter in Tampa thanked him for creating jobs by quadrupling the size of his $12 million California beachfront mansion.”  I guess Romney must be one of those “job creators” that Boner keeps on spouting off about.

After I read this story, I had one vision, the vision of George H.W. Bush being amazed when he first saw a laser bar code reader at a grocery store.  Romney is so out of touch with reality it is scary.

That was my feeling when I read it, too. In all fairness, the “us” in that statement probably refers to the country, not the middle-class part of the country. At the very least, it’s ambiguous. The really deplorable part of the whole statement is his denial that the poor are suffering and his obliviousness to the way the middle class is shrinking. The poor are suffering because they’re poor! And a lot of people who used to be part of the middle class no longer are because they don’t have jobs! So, yeah, it IS “those at the low end,” because they don’t want to be there!

The real middle class that vote Republican are the real mystery to me. They’re voting for the very people who will destroy them and I can’t for the life of me understand that. It’s as though they are begging to have what they have left reduced even more.
If Romney thinks he’s the middle class how does he view the real middle class? I bet he sees them as the ‘poor’ and the poor as ‘illegal aliens’.
This entire situation we’re in and blaming Obama baffles me. Who do Republican supporters think got into the dept we’re in? When Bush took office we had a surplus. But this fact is lost on all Republicans. They just hate on Democrats with no real reason for that hate. I just hope the Democrats will at some point before it too late (if not already) wake up and pound home the real problem with the US. It’s the demise of the middle class by Republicans who have over the years re-distributed wealth from the middle class to the rich. The poor have just been thrown a bone with very little hope attached and no future.
The lack of jobs and the rising cost of food is the main reason any countries citizens revolt and we’re not far from this. No one has been jailed or even charged with the financial debacle and I doubt there ever will be.
I hope for the best, but look at the mess we’re in and the lack of any leadership from Republicans who are out to stop Obama at all costs. They’re have said and continue to say they will take the country down rather than to anything that helps Obama even if that help, helps America too.

“the vision of George H.W. Bush being amazed when he first saw a laser bar code reader at a grocery store”

I saw an interview with GHWBush and he was asked why he lost to Clinton in ’92, and without hesitation he said it was not knowing what a bar-code scanner was!

In that video clip of Bush being shown the bar code scanner, not only is he amazed at the tech – which he had obviously never seen before – he then says, “they should put these in all the stores’ – which they already had!  So he showed the world that he has never, ever set foot inside a grocery store, only his servants do his shopping.

His son, GWBush, was another elitist from Connecticut who had never bought or cooked his own food before.  His Texas ‘ranch’ was hastily put together for him to pretend as if her were a normal person, and not the obscenely wealthy and obnoxious rich-kid from the Connecticut suburbs that he actually was.

The average U.S. income is $33,400 a year. Mitt Romney’s net worth is $250 million!!! I’m calling heaping piles of bullshit here!!!!!…………. If Mitt thinks that middle class Americans are millionaires, he is even way more out of touch with reality then I thought. WHAT A DOUCHE!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MO5ZIM63H5W5ZAE6OQQQDEYD3Q Ronald Fuller

Romney has set new standards for me. If $265 million is middle class that means I have no friends or even acquaintances in the middle class. In fact I know of thousands of whole cites that have no middle class. We are so much worse off than I thought. We must raise taxes even higher than I thought so that we can upgrade this country to middle class. Being middle class Romney must be with us because he suffers so much.

Only 50% pay taxes?  I’ve heard that several times, but never heard the proof or figures to support it. And even if I give you that…that income tax filers are just 50% of the population, how do they get around payroll taxes taken out of their check?  And don’t try and tell me that the Earned Income Credit hands out several grand to people that haven’t paid in…it’s a credit.  It’s an argument I hear trotted out again and again lately, that those below the poverty line need to kick in some more money in order for the top 3% to start creating jobs for them.  As the House and current corporate culture has shown, give them an inch and they will take a mile… then ask for their inch back.

  • Taleisin

Romney is only a millionaire. So he is middle class.
The Billionaires are upper class, and the rest are lower class.

Elizabeth Warren needs to have a lttle talk with Mit. i think she can fix his misconception on who the middle class is and the value that they represent to the economy. Mit has forgotten who buys all the cars, homes and groceries he profits from. We are also the ones who have a retirement account that gets destroyed when he shorts the stocks and manipulates the market through his hedge fund buddies. Mit is a pure wall street parasite.

  • Anonymous

Actually, he’s in a whole different world than 99.9% of us.  His wealth puts him in that 0.1% of the super elite rich.  I believe he’s worth an estimated 190-250 million?   If this slimy P.O.S. puts his wealth (taking the average of 220 million) in a CD at 1% interest he still earns over 2 million dollars this year which would be 1.85 million left after the capital gains tax (remember, he’s “unemployed” so doesn’t have to pay the regular tax rate as the working “middle class” do.)  Anyone who stood there today who earns under 100k per year and heard him spew that filth who would still vote Republican are the real cause of this disaster we’re spinning into here.

Hey Mitt, I’ll sell you my house for $12 million, and then you can create even more jobs fixing it up so it’s worth $12 million. Do we have a deal?

  • Benway for the Nova Police

Well, you see, you’re not really rich anymore until you have a billion dollars. I mean, Ted Turner was just complaining he couldn’t afford an airplane because he only has a billion. So technically speaking, Romney IS middle class. It’s just that anyone with less than a hundred million dollars is either working class or poor. And those folks in the ghetto? Oh, they’re just cannon fodder.

Mitt Romney is “MIDDLE CLASS?” Since when is a person, who owns 4 or more houses measuring 5,000 sq.ft. a middle class income earner? We must live in 2 different countries, because anyone who earns that much, has that many houses and that much wealth stored that they can tear down a perfectly good 5,000 sq.ft. house to build a house of 10,000 sq.ft. or more because the other one “just doesn’t have enough bedrooms” is middle class.
    This is despicable and deplorable.
