Jon Stewart to GOP base: Your candidates aren’t the problem — it’s you

By David Edwards

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart offered a little advice to a Republican base that first preferred Rep. Michele Bachmann and then Texas Gov. Rick Perry and now wants New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to be the party’s presidential nominee.

“You want to add another candidate?” Stewart asked the GOP base. “It’s like the Republican primary is a season of American Idol in reverse, where every week you just add some new idiot… Have you ever considered the possibility that your candidates aren’t the problem — it’s you?”

“It’s like the Republican base is at war with its own talking points,” he explained. “I want someone who is going to cut taxes and balance the budget, someone who’s a skilled orator and doesn’t talk all fancy, a child of poor immigrants who will build a fence to keep them out of this country, someone who’s strong enough for a man but pH balanced for a woman, someone who will roll up their sleeves but not show their arms.”

Stewart added: “It’s like your ideal candidate is a rare super-heavy element that can only exist in a particular particle accelerator and, even then, for only a fraction of a second before you all remember how much you all hate science. You guys need to take a long hard look in the mirror — you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and not come away thinking, ‘There is something wrong with this mirror.’”

The GOP base, especially the Teabagging type, also believe that the world is flat and the sun revolves around it, & would love to reinstate the Spanish Inquisition here.

BTW: Where are the birth certificates of all the GOP candidates, the long form?

  • Anonymous

This is one of those time where the base created the candidates.

That’s one thing the Tea Party can be given credit for.  They forced the Republican Establishment to shift rather than just accept what they were lining up.  We have to make this happen on the Left so that sanity can be reintroduced to the debate.

    Jon Stewart for President!!!

    Seriously. Jon Stewart for President.

  • http://juansrants.blogspot.com/ JuanLiberale

The calls for Christie to jump in reminds me of when the GOP was convinced that Fred Thompson was their magic bullet. Baggers are running the party and they just can’t find a candidate that is evil enough for them. They had one that was insane enough, then they swerved over to one that was dumb enough, now they are just desperately trying to find another and it has to be someone who isn’t a Mormon.

It’s hard to be a Republican. All they can say is what would Reagan do and I’m the most like Reagan. Did anyone ever hear Reagan pushing religion? Did anyone ever hear Reagan saying we shouldn’t help when a disaster strikes? The problem is that the people in power will do whatever it takes to stay in power and that includes out right lies and then claiming they are a Christian. It’s hard to debate a person if they can fall back on Jesus told me to do it. That it was needed to get the people to see the light.

Shall we profile the dems now…hmmmm  Obama on campaign vs Obama in office?  Compare Obama and McCain’s top 5 campaign contributors?  Not Necessary since there is relatively no discernable diffference.  How about will the dems field anyone with a spine to challenge Big O?  If you still believe the two parties, are indeed two parties, you’ve stopped paying attention.

    Stewart is so rational.
Regurgitating the views of 1% of the country and applying it to a party that respresents 50%.
He should move to Greece, they instituted all the policies that liberals have been trying to shove down the throats of republicans over 10 years ago, and they proved to be 100% successful.  Just ask Germany, they get the privilege of paying for them.

It really is the system stupid. A system of government-sanctioned bribery. This is really what has to be replaced otherwise whomever goes in will merely be just another face playing by the same rules. It’s up to you now. And it’s up to me. Let’s all look in the mirror shall we?   These are incredible times. History is being made. Woe unto you worshipers of the Great Reptile. Did I not say, hath it not been spoken:

“That which ye do to the least of my children, so shall ye have done unto me”

Yet even still thou hath set thy hearts in blackness as thou murders my children in my name for wealth and greed. Ye hath fallen at the feet of the Great Reptile to whom ye pay homage even to thine own detriment.

Yea that Great Reptile who serves ye tea as a potion and a snare. What hath happened to thy humanity and love of human kind. What hath happened to turn thy hearts and souls so dark that ye would suffer the hungry and the homeless, the dispossessed and grief stricken, the aged and infirm based on lies and inequity?

Yea the Great Reptile hath promised thee that all ye do in my name and all that ye steal and plunder and pay unto him in tribute, he shall share at the feast with thee and trickle down the plunder and wealth unto ye a payment for thy servitude and homage to his plunder of the world and all it contains.

Yea even still ye listen as the great reptile whispers in thine ears. He encourages ye to wage war for plunder and resources ye do not own but covet in far away lands. He hath convinced thee that the killing of women and children in the pursuit of plunder is collateral damage and that it is their fault that they worship not the same as ye do.

Yea, the Great Reptile enslaves thee in mind and spirit through lies and deceit and even though ye know that ye have been lied to, yet and still ye continue to worship at his feet. You give all of thy wealth to the Great Reptile, in hopes that he will trickle some of it your way and still that is not enough. So ye pledge the lives of thy sons and daughters that they may fight and die in faraway lands, murdering the
innocent along with the guilty for resources the Great Reptile has convinced thee that ye can’t do without.

Yea, those people in those faraway lands fight at the coming of the followers of the Great Reptile. Occupiers and conqueror’s who doth steal their resources without just cause or compensation. Ye label those people as terrorists, yet they knew no such terror prior to your comings and goings.Ye point fingers at their leaders and call them unjust for the killing of a few, yet when you came into their midst ye did kill them by the tens of thousands and millions, whilst claiming to liberate them. Even still thy rulers under the banner of Great Reptile continue to oppress thee and reduce thee to the same poverty he inflicts upon those he hath sent thee to kill in his name.

Would that they had the same weapons of power and destruction, equal to those that thou hast afflicted them with, ye would cry out in indignation and petition for peace at once, least ye suffer the same fate that ye inflict upon them and their kin on a daily basis. Yet and still ye wonder at their refusal to submit to the murder of their kin and theft of their resources.

Yea, ye even feign righteous indignation at the thought of them wanting retribution for the killing of their innocents. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers. Woe that the same were done unto thee as thou hast
done unto countless numbers of them.

Ye lay siege to their cities, denying them food, water and shelter. Ye rain death upon them from the sky. Yea, you ravage their infrastructure and then charge them at usury, to rebuild that which they already had prior to your incursions, thereby fattening the coffers of the Great Reptile, none of
which he trickles down unto you.

How is it that ye have become so blind to the inequities that ye have set upon the rest of the world?
Can you not see or, do you not care?Yea this Great Reptile hath poisoned thy minds as he causes thee to drink tea from the cup of inequity. Such a potion hath he given thee to drink as has polluted thy hearts and minds against thy fellow man.

Thou hath broken my commandments and coveted another man’s land. Thou hath broken my covenants and steal the mineral resources of other nations without due and just compensation. Ye hath broken my covenant and set upon other peoples and your own people the yoke of usury, after destroying their
lives, homes and communities, all to the profit of the Great Reptile who shares none of it with you and trickles none of it down to you.

Yea, ye have murdered hundreds of thousands, even millions in my name while worshiping at the feet of the Great Reptile, and even when shown the truth and error of thy ways, continue on in deliberate and willful indifference as though those people whom ye have plundered, pillaged, tortured, raped, robbed and murdered are irrelevant and do not matter.

Surely, thine eyes have been blinded and thy hearts have been shuttered to the truth. Those whom ye follow are reptiles in human skin. They have taken over thy governments, thy financial temples and and thy centers of commerce whom ye call Corporations. Know ye not that those entities do not live, breathe or have souls? Why hath thou elevated them to positions of power and wealth greater than thine own? Yet and still they are infested with Reptiles. Even so all of them worship at the feet of the Great Reptile.

Woe unto you, O’ ye followers of the Great Reptile. Ye claim to knowest my words and the words of mine only Son. Yet ye follow in the footsteps of the Great Reptile who shows mercy to none. He hath no consideration for man or mankind and trickles nothing thy way.

Put aside this tea which the Great Reptile hath used as a potion to ensnare thee and open thine eyes before it is too late.

Entitlements….free health insurance (Paid for by the tax payer) free utilities (paid for by the tax payer) staff – same way. Free retirement after only two years in some cases in office. Then when they leave office they are “entitled to a free office, free utilities, free staff etc” also paid for by the taxpayer. Republicans continuously ignore actual facts, and Jon Stewart simply points that out.  The Bush tax cuts do NOT create jobs.  They’ve been in place for TEN years (unfortunately)…where are the jobs?  Fannie and Freddie did what all the big banks did regarding mortgages.  And none of the banks could get away with their fraud and tricky use of our savings UNTIL the Graham, Leach, Bliley Act said, “go ahead, it’s legal now”. Derivatives using our mortgages were sold and re-sold till the mortgages are practically impossible to find. That mess was Republican engineered, and Clinton signed it. But the Republican meme is…”Fannie and Freddie caused everything, referring to mortgages for lower-income people.”

We have to six what’s wrong.  And one thing I know for SURE is wrong:  Never again vote for a Republican House!

  • Anonymous

Stewart is right. Members of the GOP are willing to let people die if they don’t have health insurance, kill people if they are on death row and cut programs for the poor because hey, it’s their fault they are poor. A more heartless, soulless, less empathetic bunch of folks I have never seen. And you are giving Stewart too much credit. Fox Propaganda, which runs 24/7/365, is much more responsible for the polarization of this country than a half-hour show that runs four days a week, only 42 weeks a year. What else is responsible for the soullessness of the GOP?

um…I’m a strict Separationist but one cannot highlight what doesn’t exist.  There is no text in the Constitution actually *saying* ‘separation of church and state’.  The intent was there, as Jefferson articulated to the Danbury Baptists (and which SCOTUS has upheld time and time again) but it doesn’t actually SAY there’s a wall of separation.  The only thing one could highlight would be the passage in the 1st Amendment which says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.  This is usually interpreted to prohibit the government from establishing a *preferrance* for any religion, but that can clash with the ‘free excercise’ part, so SCOTUS ruled toward the middle. This is called the ‘accomadation interpretation’. The accommodation interpretation prohibits Congress from preferring one religion over another, but does not prohibit the government’s entry into religious domain to make accommodations in order to achieve the purposes of the Free Exercise Clause.

While one would like to believe that any clear thinking, reasonable person would understand that, in order to ensure ”freedom of religion’ for *all* people, there MUST be a separation of church and state the Constitution doesn’t explicitly prohibit such comingling. One might wish the Founders had specified and articulated their intent within the document, but they didn’t.  Unfortunately.

Stewart makes yet another salient point.

It is the religious fervor behind the GOP’s allegiance to dumb ideas
that is key to how they are hurting The Nation.

They are a bunch of people who deeply believe that, for example, cutting taxes will increase revenues
for the long haul, despite the fact that IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED (I’m not talking about meaningless short-term increases by a smidgen).

    They probably also believe 2+2=13.
And they’d believe it with all their hearts and HATE anyone whoclaims facts to the contrary.

We could reduce corporate taxes by 20% if we had the tax base from 20 years ago and have more revenue.  Dems couldn’t help but raise taxes on the big bad corporations, and now with significantly higher taxes we have LESS revenue, and back then the “dumb ideas” republicans had were things like ‘The theory of diminishing returns.”
Guess what?  Our returns have diminished and now the dems ideas are, Raise them again.
Unless you are going to pass a law saying China can’t ship all their goods here and demolish our prices and our business, then you are asking for yet more diminishing returns.  It’s a pretty solid theory.
Too bad Oborrow bows down to China just like unions and is handing over our country to them.

You know what mandated health care was?  Another US policy cheered by Chinese business because it is one more tax on US business and no tax on China.  ONE MORE huge f-ing trade advantage they didn’t even need.
    Good work Oborrow.

They are gullible to the extreme. The right-wing noise machine can basically tell them anything and they will of course believe it.

It is what happen to authoritarian personalities who become cable-TV zombies. The so-called right is literally brainless….sheeple who parrot what they heard on TV or am-radio.

Shall we compare the progressive base and their reaction to Obomba vs the so-called right and the sounds of silence during the years 2001-2008?

The so-called left may not be perfect but a simple comparison of them while somebody who claims to be on their side is in office vs the so-called rights Machiavellian behavior is very telling.

    Which side has integrity?

The democrats are just as bad as the republicans.. if not worse, because they just assume Obama is making things happen, while the GOP is holding him / the dem policies back. YEAH RIGHT. Go look at what Obama has done… Its like Bush was his idol and to honor him he kept all of his shitt$ policies in place. OBAMA AND BUSH AND LEFT AND RIGHT…. ITS ALL AN ILLUSION PEOPLE. WE ARE THE 99%. THATS IT. THE EXTREMELY RICH VS EVERYONE ELSE.

Your first line accurately titles every post you make.  Once again endless misinformation.  You are certainly a fount of misinformation.

Corporations need to pay their fair share of taxes.  The things they use need to be paid for and the costs accurately accounted.  Having the rest of us subsidize some fat, rich bastards corporation throws costing out of balance.  You spout about free markets then you want some fat rich bastards company subsidized by those of us that are decent, honest and hard working.

Again you spout your endless misinformation.

Despite his occasional partisanship Jon Stewart is far more often intellect than not. I do like how he brought on Ron Paul after his generalization. Ron didn’t explain his position as well as he usually does. I’m not sure if that’s due to Jon’s groupthink just prior, or the short time frame in which Ron Paul was allotted, both, or perhaps something else, but I do think Jon played it accordingly in trying to make exception to the groupthink behavior.

When the entire ideology is morally and intellectually bankrupt, supporters shouldn’t be surprised to find that their politicians are as well.

    Ironic indeed

Of course in your make-believe world there is no such word as outsourcing, ‘US business’ has Americans interests first and foremost, right?

  • Anonymous

Stewart hit the nail on the head! It’s of course, taboo to place the BLAME for our dysfunctional politicians & system on the hallowed ‘American people’ but it’s the truth. You get the government (or candidates) you elect — and the Rethug base is mainly to blame for the dangerous and abysmal state of politics and governance today

     ”Despite his occasional partisanship”

???  lol he’s a liberal talk show host, and makes no bones about it (that’s ~why~ he’s far more often intelligent than not), so of course he has occasional partisanship!

  • Anonymous

Well, guess you never read comments here on RS. Lots of folks — Dems/prorgressives — are very critical and disgusted w/Obama. But dipshit Rethug voters & ‘independents’ CONTINUE to elect right-wingers. They are the worst of the worst — a no brainer — and they don’t just magically appear in office.

  • Anonymous

You are the one feeding/eating misinformation pal.

While technically correct, the US does have one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. The reality is that their cronies in Washington have so convoluted the tax code with deductions, and breaks, the actual revenue collected is quite small. Outsourcing and offshore money laundering also siphons more away.

The fact is that 9% of federal tax receipts come from corporate taxes. 42% come from individual income tax collections.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._Federal_Receipts_-_FY_2007.png

So instead of parroting the corporate propaganda, how about you educate yourself and develop sentience. Corporations are bleeding America dry, enslaving/poisoning the populace and concentrating wealth into the hands of the select few making the “American Dream” a fairy tale. They own the politicians that are supposed to be representing you, and you are their willing slave it seems.

I think his point was pretty clear. The left is just as guilty of blind allegiance.

Can I let you in on a secret.  It’s not really two parties anymore.  Well it is if you consider establishment CFR-types vs Non-establishment outsiders, with generally only one of those two every winning in bulk.  Anything you try to lump on a R, was and is being propogated by D’s as well.  Where is our whistleblowing civil liberties, peace prize democrat president?   Oh he was sworn in.  Remember Bush?  This is  Obombya.  Meet the new Boss, same as the old.  You know it’s bad when a libertarian conservative longs for good ole days(almost) of Clinton after Bush 1.

It sure is very entertaining what you continue to present here. You were the person that three weeks ago stated that “President Perry will fix Obama’s mess”….”Perry is gonna make a fine President”…and so on. It sure was ugly watching Perry’s mediocre performance at ALL of the debates now wasn’t it? There sure is alot of abandoning the sinking ship that is the Perry campaign going on now. So much for your  barking about Presidents getting fired and ideas not working. You can’t even pick a candidate that can win a debate against his  own peers let alone get the sitting President fired.

“…An unabashed child killing…”       In spite of efforts by the GOP to press this wedge issue, most Americans support a woman’s right to choose.      Besides, republicans just love to burden poor people with unwanted children while cutting access to any means of supporting them.

Agreed — the two parties are alike in many ways but also different  — I let in on that secret, too. Obysmal has been abysmal and I totally agree w/your points. That being said the right-wing is still the biggest menace to all our well-being & survival — and we have to recognize that along with the corporate take-over of Dems.  It’s not an all or nothing issue.
