Russell Simmons: I will bring hundreds of thousands to ‘Occupy Wall Street’

Hip hop magnate Russell Simmons said Thursday on MSNBC that he planned on joining the ongoing “Occupy Wall Street” in lower Manhattan.

Simmons, who has an estimated net-worth of $340 million, noted that all his employees paid more taxes than he did.

“Last time I got involved in a protest I brought a hundred thousand people there, for the Rockefeller Drug Laws,” he said. “And if I get involved really heavily in this one, we find the agenda and have a common ground… we can bring hundreds of thousands of people… small seeds are planted, but it could grow into something very big.”

WHY is there a GOLDMAN SACHS ad on this effing video?!?!?

  • Dem. Socialism

O.K., Russell, you kind of lost my confidence when you said: “And IF I get involved really heavily in this one…”

    Keep us posted….

Russell Simmons can bring a lot of influence to the table but until he stops ripping off people with his “RUSHCARD” fees and tricks, designed to steal money from poor people, I do not see much difference between him and the rest of the crooks on Wall Street. He will be protesting against himself!

I agree.  Talk is cheap, action proves that you can walk the walk.

A multi-millionaire “backing” the protest party…where have I heard this before?

  • Anonymous

If he gets really involved he’ll sit like everyone else as a part of the people’s assemblies.

This isn’t such a good thing.

The last thing America needs is wealthy egotists playing Napoleon and hijacking this very tentative movement.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QXLEARZUGKXGY2SIRFKMIMHFOI Suelynn

Parts of it undoubtedly were–look up OTPOR Egypt on a search engine.

But this was in response to a movement not of CIA stooges from the Color Revolution–or of Google executives waving hip iBling–but of the Egyptian workers themselves.

That’s what America doesn’t want you to know.

The success of these movements is far from inevitable, and the opposition from our illegal, murdering government and their corporate masters ranges from unspeakable brutality to delicate subtlety.

If democracy broke out across the Middle East it would be undermined by the CIA. The US doesn’t want democracy in the MIddle East. Wall Street, big banks, big oil and corporate america would lose too much money.

A protest of about 100,000 on Saturday & Sunday would send a good signal to Wall Street gangsters.
I predict that will give them something to think about on Monday morning.
But watch out for the NYPD spies and the Goon Squads waiting to clear out the protestors.

  • morty62

Now, if we can get Suge Knight to show up your damn skippy action will be taken, and fast.

This is wonderful news!  We really need good Obama supporters like Russell Simmons in this to get Our President a much needed boost for the election next year!

  • taz delaney

better that than not, though, eh? i mean, gotta sorta like it when buffet says to tax the rich.

  • taz delaney

take it where we find it… it was the disaffected rich french who backed the american revolutionaries and later they backed those admired by ours, the commune-ists of danton that broke the french monarchy.

Sorry to break it to you, but the protesters are not Obama supporters, and they aren’t Republicans either. They are protesting both of them because they both take a large amount of money from corporations. Obama and the Democrats have been bought the same way that Republicans have. That’s why Obama’s cabinet has so many wall street insiders on it.

Now would be the best time for Wikileaks to release the BOA files.  RIGHT NOW to fill the streets to capacity.  These Bankers/Wall Street parasites would be running for their lives.  Thousands in the streets would turn into tens of thousands.

  • HeavyHebrew

I met people from a wide swath of political leanings at the Seattle group. The common ground? Our country is being stolen from us by the banks and corporations and they, the People, want to do something about that.

Since it is a unifying message and involves people of all types, stripes, shades and flavors the MSM will ignore it.

  • HeavyHebrew

How’s that Blue Team puppet show going? Not as entertaining as the Red Team puppet show, boy that ride is getting crayzee!

BTW, the protesters are not what you may call Obama supporters. Go ask them @ OccupyWallStreet.org

  • HeavyHebrew

Suge Knight in NYC? Man doesn’t have a death wish.

  • HeavyHebrew

Anyone calling for violence needs to be singled out and brought to the attention of leadership of the protest.
Especially the mask wearing, combat boot “anarchists” that seem to fade away when the cops arrive.

  • Anonymous

Is this really going to happen or is this yet another thing that the OWS organizers made up like the Radiohead bullshit?

  • David Linde

Why don’t all these “rich” people who are saying “raise my taxes” just give their money to the government? Nothing is stopping them.  You can give as much as you want to the IRS any time you want.

Or better yet, put your money where your mouth is.  Why not go into these poor neighborhood, open a business, and give these people jobs with health benefits?  Have a direct impact rather then have the government raise your taxes and spend it on war, paying off their friends, and giving themselves raises, which is where you know it will go before the poor ever see a dime.

  • HeavyHebrew

I highly doubt R.S can hijack this message. He may just be with the protest. He was born poor, he remembers.

The American University in Egypt taught students how to utilize social media for “spreading democracy’.

Now people might think “hey HH, it worked” but sit back and think about this, Egypt is now controlled by a military style council. Not a transition coalition of political parties. Not a sweeping uprising across the countryside resulting in the downfall of an authoritarian regime resulting in nationwide democratic elections.
A military council. In a country with a long history of military coups, dictatorshps and authoritarianism.

Yea, the work across north africa will work out quite well for the elites.

Just went to the bank. Made a mistake, one in two year of having the account. Mistakes happen, right? I was in a hurry, trying to get out the door for a business trip. I check my account online. I see I made a mistake. I tell myself, as I do not bank with a “national” company, “oh, I’ll fix it when I get home.

    1. I “opt’ed out”. Meaning, I had to go down to the bank, and tell them to deny charges that would overdraw my account. They let two go through that they were trying to charge me 62 dollars for.  Important note: I have another little card that A could have used had the card been denied.

    2. After I arrived home, and went down to the bank to fix the problem, they had charged me another 70 dollar s for not coming in “quick enough”. God forbid, I do not heed there demands.

Now that’s 132 dollars they were trying to charge me for one mistake in two years those two mistakes were a 12 dollar charge and a 33 dollar charge; 45 dollar total.  That would make a 34% penalty on one mistake in two years, you see I only put a little money in this account, it helps me not spend money I would other wise not like to spend. I have a “main” account elsewhere. One that I never access online for security purposes, etc…

    1. As I explained to the bank, I would gladly see them in court over this 132 dollar amount, because I truly do not believe for a minute that even one of my peers on a jury would consider this reasonable, especially, when I had “opt’ed out”.

    2. Every single American should just take their money out of their “lending” racket (banks), and file for bankruptcy?

Please, people, I’m begging you. USE YOUR BRAINS. Work smarter not
harder. It really is so simple. We can have them on their knees in an
instant. It’s always about the money trail, and “WE THE PEOPLE” can
block that trail. Hit them in their pocketbooks, etc, etc…

…and this idea is really isn’t even my own. I must give credit where it is due. This is straight up Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

One easy way to be an activist is to take your money of the big banks like Bank
of America and start using your local credit union. By definition they are not for
profit, and generally have less fees and pay better interest.

Best of all your money stays in your community and helps you neighbor buy
a house, car, or start a new business instead of going to the Wall Street big
shots so they can gamble with it.

Yeah, I looked in to this. Like the economic papers I read (like five of them) at the university all seem to state that raising taxes on the rich will decrease inequality. I think you are kind of full of it.

This is *exactly* what the fascist pigs and their Oligarchy corporate masters want. With “hip hop” shitards joining the Occupations, count on them committing violence, rioting, and looting, giving the theofascist State justification for cracking more heads and suppressing the rebellion. Not good. Not good at all. Watch what happens now.

  • http://www.chicagomassaction.org/ realnewz

Ok thanks. I ask because I know its been reported that the CIA does operate in these Arabian Spring countries via torture black sites. There was probably a certain amount of collusion with CIA and their govts.

Honestly, I think its a little bit of both. I said something along the lines a few days ago,
they are using our anger against corrupt corp$/govt against us but its not for our benefit. imo.

According to this doc the CIA spread propaganda in Iraq to kick Saddam out,
while war mongering propaganda here gained support for the Iraq/Afghanistan war$.
I think this is what is going on here with Occupy Wall St.

Fake Dem – Paid Troll poster.

You are transparent to us… we can see the Koch funds running through your veins.

Everyone knows both the Dems and GOP are the problem.

That’s why OWS is happening – both parties have failed to protect democracy from the plutocrats on Wall Street and now the people want their country back.

  • Anonymous

The partisan lines we have divide us on wedge issues.  The Dem/GOP thing just distracts us.

Neither Obama or Boehner put the tax-loopholes, etc. up for debate and that alone spoke far more loudly to most of us than any bullshit coming out of any politician’s mouth.
