Rep. Jackie Speier: U.S. military punishes rape victims

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) for the ninth time on Tuesday called on Congress to address the pervasive problem of sexual harassment and rape in the U.S. military.

To call attention to the problem, she has been telling the stories of woman who were sexually harassed and assaulted while serving in U.S military.

“This is the ninth time that I have stood on the floor of this House to speak about the unspeakable,” Speier said. “Each of these military members has served proudly for their country, each of them has been raped, and each has been re-victimized by a system of justice that protects perpetrators and punishes victims. I will continue to share these stories until something changes.”

She went on to tell Congress about a woman who was told by an Army chaplain it was God’s will for her to be raped.

The Department of Defense estimates there were 19,000 incidences of sexual assault in 2010 and only 13.5 percent of those were reported.
