While anti-war protesters rallied against NATO’s involvement in conflicts around the globe on Sunday, a group of Syrian-Americans gathered in Chicago to call on NATO to enforce a no-fly zone over their native country.
Activist claim more than 12,000 people have been killed by the Syrian government since protesters took the streets in March 2011. The conflict has recently spilled over into Syria’s western neighbor, Lebanon.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told AFP on Monday that the Cold War-era alliance of Western countries “had no intention to intervene” in Syria, even though the Western powers’ helped topple Libya’s Moamer Kadhafi last year.
“We strongly condemn the behavior of the Syrian security forces and their crackdowns on the Syrian population and we urge the Syrian leadership to accommodate the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people,” he said.
