Raw Story, an independently-owned progressive news and politics site, is looking to fill several positions on an ongoing basis.
Swing-shift Editor
This position is geared at people interested in getting more experience in online journalism who might be willing to take on more responsibility later. Designed to give current contract staff the ability to take time off, we’re looking for people with maximum flexibility in terms of their schedules — though we’ll almost always notify you at least one week before a shift comes available — who are team players with good news judgment, who have the ability to learn quickly and are solid workers who require minimal supervision. The job’s responsibilities are similar to those of the associate editor. Send a resume, cover letter and 3 links to online writing samples to editor@rawstory.com
Internships Available
Interns are a important part of The Raw Story editorial team. You won’t be getting coffee or managing the social calendars of our senior staff. Instead you’ll receive real, hands-on training in producing one of the top independent news and political sites in the US. As an intern, you’ll help keep our editors on top of breaking news, manage our wire service content, help us with social media, pitch and write stories, and help produce video content.
Interested candidates should be quick learners who are able to work in a fast-paced environment and have exceptional writing, blogging, and multimedia skills. Please send a resume to editor@rawstory.com.
Freelancing for Raw Story
Raw Story does publish the work of freelance reporters and reviews pitches from interested reporters. Submission guidelines are as follows:
Raw Story only publishes exclusive, original, timely, reported journalism in keeping with the editorial mission and voice of the site. Pitches should be sent to the executive editor, Megan Carpentier, and be limited to 5-6 sentences that explain what the story is, what the original reporting will show and which sources will be used. Journalists new to Raw Story should include a 3-5 sentence bio after the pitch. We publish pieces between 750 and 1000 words; journalists interested in longer form pieces should consider how they can be broken up iteratively to hew to that format. Please include your requested fee with your pitch. Raw Story reserves the right to reject submitted stories for any reason, and does not pay kill fees.
Raw Story does not publish freelance: opinion pieces; stories based entirely off of others’ reporting; long-form analysis pieces that include no original reporting; first-person narratives; or pieces whose authors have a conflict of interest with that which they are reporting. Pieces accepted and published by Raw Story may not be reprinted elsewhere, including on personal sites, and nothing should be sent to us for republication. Raw Story is an equal opportunity employer and is particularly interested in publishing reported stories from people underrepresented in the media.
