GOP reeling after historic defeat: ‘Political disaster doesn’t begin to describe how bad this is for Republicans’
January 24, 2021
A new report from Roll Call details some of the many challenges facing the Republican Party as it looks to an uncertain future following former President Donald Trump's electoral defeat.
As the party turns its focus to the 2022 midterms, it remains "divided over Trump, their midterm prospects and the state of the GOP itself," Roll Call's Bridget Bowman, Kate Ackley, and Stephanie Akin report.
<p> While some, like Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), insist the Republican Party is "very unified" when compared with their Democratic counterparts, the reality is that many in the GOP, including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), are bracing for primary challenges. Some McConnell allies told Roll Call they're anticipating "'a large-scale campaign' to block far-right candidates in primaries." </p><p> Trump has already made it clear that he intends to "<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackbrewster/2021/01/06/they-will-get-primaried-trump-allies-threaten-republicans-who-wont-object-to-electoral-college/?sh=506c73b71855" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">primary the hell</a>" out of any Republicans who didn't back the president's effort to overturn the election. </p><p> "Political disaster doesn't begin to describe how bad this is for Republicans," GOP consultant Alex Conant said. </p><p> "The 2022 primaries are going to be where those tensions get tested," former Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Ryan A. Costello told Roll Call. </p><p> And former National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) head Rep. Thomas M. Davis III likewise cautioned the party against allowing Trump to maintain control even after it suffered crippling defeat in under his leadership. </p><p> "The more Trump hangs around, the intensity, as we saw in Georgia, stays with Democrats," Davis said. </p><p> While <a href="https://www.alternet.org/2021/01/madison-cawthorn-2650090945/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">some new Republican House members have made their allegiance to Trump known</a>, others are taking a different approach to attract voters in the party. One such congresswoman is Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who told "Meet the Press" on Sunday that she wants "to be a new voice for the Republican Party." </p><p> "That's one of the reasons I've spoken out so strongly against the president, against these QAnon conspiracy theorists that led us in a constitutional crisis," Mace said. </p><p> But Mace's goal of uniting a party that rejects the very same conspiracy and cynicism Trump embraced (loudly) over the past 5 years may be far-fetched, at best. As GOP consultant Mike DuHaime told Roll Call, "if the party behaves like it has in the last two months, we shouldn't count on any success." </p>

Trump needs 'a lot of cash quickly' before his assets are seized: NYT business analyst
January 24, 2021
Appearing on MSNBC, New York Times financial investigative reporter Dean Enrich claimed Donald Trump is under the gun to come up with money quickly with some massive loans coming due soon and banks starting to look at seizing his assets.
Enrich, who wrote "Dark Towers: Deutsche Bank, Donald Trump, and an Epic Trail of Destruction," said the ex-president is facing a slew of banks that won't have anything to do with him and that previous lenders have already announced they are cutting him off from new credit.
Speaking with host Alex Witt, the business analyst explained, "There are both civil and criminal and congressional investigations that are still seeking after years of trying to get trump's financial records from Deutsche Bank and, you know, it's anyone's guess what that is going to show. We know at Deutsche Bank, though, there were employers who raised money laundering concerns in both the Trump and [Jared] Kushner accounts. We still don't have the full story about what happened there."
"I trust you will get to the bottom of that," Witt replied. "Let me ask you, though, is this just the beginning? How many more banks or financial institutions have relationships with Donald Trump and what's the impact on his finances of this?"
'I think it's a very serious financial impact for him," Enrich quickly replied. "He has hundreds of millions of dollars of debt coming due in the next few years, most of it to Deutsche Bank, but not all of it. And normally, a borrower would go to the lender and say, 'can we refinance the loan, extend it a few years?' That's not going to be an option for Trump with most of these loans."
"He's going to need to come up with a lot of cash quickly or he's going to be at risk of defaulting," he added. "In the case of Deutsche Bank, if he defaults, the bank has recourse to his personal assets. They could go to court to seize his property or the money he has in various banking accounts. So he's going to need to come up with cash very quickly and his businesses right now are struggling, so it's very unclear to me where he might be able to get that money."

'This is why Joe Biden won': Amy Klobuchar unloads devastating response after Rand Paul's election meltdown
January 24, 2021
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said that she listened in disbelief on Sunday as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) became incensed after he was put in the position of defending President Donald Trump's election lies.
Paul made the remarks during an interview with ABC host George Stephanopoulos.
<p>
"Where you make a mistake is that people coming from the liberal side like you, you immediate say everything's a lie instead of saying there are two sides to everything," Paul complained. "Historically what would happen is if I said I thought there was fraud, you would introduce someone else who said there wasn't. But now you insert yourself in the middle and say that the absolute fact is that everything I'm saying is a lie."
</p><p>
Following Paul's interview, Klobuchar offered a reaction to Stephanopoulos.
</p><p>
"As I listened to Rand Paul, George, I just kept thinking, man, this is why Joe Biden won," Klobuchar said. "The American people right now are struggling. They need pandemic relief, they are literally trying to balance toddlers on their knees and their laptops on their desks and teaching their first graders how to use a mute button just to go to school."
</p><p>
"They need help and I thoroughly believe we can handle this impeachment trial and -- just as the American people are doing -- juggle what we need to get done," she added.
