'Republicans are eating their own': Morning Joe says GOP legitimizing conspiracies by purging non-believers
January 26, 2021
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough bashed state Republican Parties by legitimizing "bizarre" conspiracy theories by purging officials who don't go along with them.
The "Morning Joe" host started the segment by marveling that many GOP voters apparently believed their political opponents were "cannibals and pedophiles," but then noted, somewhat ironically, that Republicans were "eating their own" in a purge of non-believers.
<p>"State parties are punishing the 10 Republicans who did not vote to overturn the election results," Scarborough said. "State Republican Parties and local Republican Parties are trying to censure people month did their jobs. The guy in Michigan who just did what he was supposed to do and a ministerial act, he's out of his job. Doug Ducey in Arizona, Brian Kemp in Georgia -- they are enemies of Donald Trump's Republican Party because they didn't fall victim to these conspiracy theories."</p><p>Scarborough noted that 64 federal courts have found the theories are based on lies, that there's no evidence of election fraud stealing away Trump's re-election, yet Republicans are making those lies into articles of faith.</p><p>"People are still like falling prey to this because the Republican Party in Arizona, the Republican Party in Georgia, the Republican Party in Texas, the Republican Party in Wyoming -- they are trying to punish people for not engaging in sedition," Scarborough said. "That's where the Republican Party is, and, again, where are the adults in the Republican Party that are going to stand up and start punishing this type of behavior?"</p><p>"If you like the Republican civil war in Georgia, you're going to love the Republican civil war in Arizona, because the same thing happening in Georgia is now happening in Arizona," he added. "The Republican Party is eating its own, and that turns out very badly for Republicans."</p><p>The conspiracy theories -- and the actions Republicans have taken against them -- have made the party toxic to donors, Scarborough said.</p><p>"[Rep.] Liz Cheney is the only respectable member in leadership who didn't, let's be very clear about this, who didn't vote to disenfranchise millions and millions of Black voters in Milwaukee County, Wayne County, Atlanta, Georgia, in Philadelphia," he said. "All the other Republican leadership in the House voted to disenfranchise millions and millions of black voters. What PAC, what corporation is going to give a dime to Republicans who voted to take away the votes of millions and millions of Black voters? Bull Connor never, ever did anything that was as nefarious, like taking away the voting rights of millions and millions of black voters." </p><p><br/></p>

Morning Joe drops the hammer on 'stupid as hell' Josh Hawley for whining about being silenced
January 26, 2021
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough launched into a full-throated attack on Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) on Tuesday morning, calling the Missouri Republican "stupid as hell."
Addressing Hawley's penchant for running to the press to whine he is being silenced, the "Morning Joe" host mocked the GOP senator by also dubbing him as "dumbest guy in the U.S. Senate."
'I have said this guy has to be the dumbest guy, other than [Sen.] Ron Johnson. He doesn't really count," he explained. "He has to be the dumbest guy in the United States Senate, because he is arguing that he lives in a communist country where his first amendment rights are violated as he is writing a front page op-ed on the New York Post."
'He's getting paid how much money to write a book?" he continued. "He's claiming his first amendment rights are violated because it is not [being published by] Simon & Schuster. I thought businesses had the right to choose who they do business with."
"What a whiner, all of these right-wing seditionists who are saying private companies are making decisions about the content they want in their, you know -- suddenly, they're --," he began before changing direction. "But this guy has been talking about this a long time, claiming First Amendment violations based on content they choose to run or not run."
"This guy, he wants to control their content. he wants to control what private companies in the marketplace can and cannot publish. he's either stupid as hell or out of his mind," he added."

Air pollution is likely to increase the risk of irreversible sight loss, according to the results of a long-term study published Tuesday.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness among over-50s in richer nations, with roughly 300 million people predicted to be affected by 2040.
<p>Known risk factors include age, smoking and genetic make-up.</p><p>Now researchers have drawn a link between AMD and air pollution, which is already known to carry a host of health risks including heart and lung disease.</p><p>Writing in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers analysed data from more than 115,000 participants who reported no eye problems at the start of the study period in 2006.</p><p>Official data on traffic and levels of nitrous oxide and small particulate matter was used to calculate the annual average air pollution levels at the home addresses of the participants.</p><p>They were asked to report formal diagnosis of AMD by a doctor and were tested on their sight performance several years later.</p><p>In all, 1,286 participants were diagnosed with AMD at the end of the study period.</p><p>After accounting for other influencing factors including underlying health conditions and lifestyle, fine particulate matter exposure was associated with an eight-percent higher risk of an individual contracting AMD.</p><p>"Overall, our findings suggest that ambient air pollution, especially fine (particulate matter) or those of combustion-related particles, may affect AMD risk," said the study authors.</p><p>"Our findings add to the growing evidence of the damaging effects of ambient air pollution, even in the setting of relative low exposure."</p><p>The World Health Organization estimates air pollution is responsible for at least seven million deaths every year.</p><p>Last week, a separate study estimated that reducing air pollution to WHO-recommended levels could prevent more than 50,000 deaths annually across Europe.</p><p>Tuesday's study was observational and so could not establish a causal link between air pollution and AMD.</p><p>But experts said it provided further evidence for the health risks of poor air quality.</p><p>"The association of macular degeneration with smoking is well recognised, but this new finding of an environmental link related to atmospheric pollution will add further to the climate change debate," said Robert MacLaren, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Oxford.</p><p>© 2021 AFP</p>
