Judge who blocked interracial marriage won’t resign
Beth and Terence McKay wouldn’t be married now if Judge Keith Bardwell his way. The Judge refused to marry the couple but they eventually found another justice to perform the ceremony. This morning, the newlyweds told CNN’s Kiran Chetry that they were shocked by Bardwell’s decision.
For his part, Judge Bardwell says he won’t resign. “Everybody hates me,” he told the Associated Press. “Really. I don’t know why. I treat people, I figure, equal. I have one problem with mixed marriages and that is the offspring.”
The judge says he’s “absolutely not” a racist. “My definition of a racist is to hate black people, or treat black people different that anybody else,” said Bardwell.
Sen. Mary Landrieu and Gov. Bobby Jindal have said they would like to see Bardwell step down.
