Daily Show's Trevor Noah asks Republicans if removing cocaine in soda is 'cancel culture' too
March 07, 2021
Republicans are still whining about Dr. Seuss's foundation, making the decision to stop publishing six books that have racist imagery in it. While it had nothing to do with a political party, somehow Fox News blamed Democrats and "liberals" for another example of "cancel culture."
"The Daily Show's" Trevor Noah posted a video on Sunday afternoon explaining that the decision by Dr. Seuss's own estate made the decision, something that seemed to get lost in the complaints by Republicans.

"And look, I know that this thing was blowing up and it was trending all over Twitter," Noah explained. "But there's always gonna be people on Twitter telling you that this is the end of civilization. Because fanning the flames of culture wars is how they get attention."

Noah explained that an organization made a decision that they didn't want to be associated with outdated imagery that is racist.

"That's not being canceled," Noah explained. "That's something that companies and organizations do all the time! Like, at some point, Coca-Cola was like, 'Hey maybe putting cocaine in our drink is harmful to the public. Maybe we should stop doing that.' Nobody called that cancel culture!"

At least, they haven't yet.

See the video below:

Another COVID-19 stimulus is finally sending some relief to Americans who've desperately needed it since last fall. It's a plan that former President Donald Trump supported; 77 percent of Americans supported it too, according to a Morning Consult poll. But the Republican party was a "no." At the same time, Democrats have been at work to raise the minimum wage to keep somewhat on track with inflation. The Republicans said "no" again. Restoring The Voting Rights Act has drawn opposition from Republicans too.
It all promoted Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle to ask if they have any ideas at all.

"But the conservative movement doesn't deserve what this kind of discourse is doing. Because arguments and indignation are starting to define the limits of conservative ideas — and defiant gestures are increasingly what the party has in place of policy," McArdle wrote Sunday.

She argued that there are legitimate arguments to have over issues before the House and Senate. There are even arguments that can be had over reopening, vaccines and when schools should reopen. But instead of having debates or discussing the issues, the GOP has gone to the extreme.

"Complain all you want that the COVID-19 relief bill has been packed with all sorts of unrelated stuff from the Democratic wish list — at least the Democrats have a wish list," McArdle said. "What's the Republican equivalent? Often it seems to be literally a bunch of wishes — that the media wouldn't be so liberal or so mean, that corporations wouldn't go Full Woke in their diversity trainings, that social media platforms would stop wielding the ban-hammer so enthusiastically against conservatives. The closest thing this has produced to a real, live governing agenda is 'Repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act,' which wouldn't really fix the problems with social media that Republicans want to address and might do a bunch of things they don't want, and at any rate is not, by itself, enough to run a country."

These aren't legislative issues. This isn't a party agenda and it isn't something that would help the voters in their districts. However, it is something that their base is talking about on social media. They're also issues that raise a lot of money in fundraising for Republican officials, said a former GOP official.

"A once-proud movement risks turning into one perpetual, primal scream: "'I'm not gonna, and you can't make me,'" she closed. "That is not a movement; it is a second adolescence. And whatever the merits of masks or reopening, that reflexively oppositional impulse is unhealthy — for conservatives, and for America."

Read the full column at the Washington Post.

'Very close to child abuse': Doctor attacks protest where parents force children to burn masks
March 07, 2021
Over the weekend a protest outside the Idaho state capitol drew groups of anti-maskers and "anti-vaxxers" some of whom turned their children over to a trashcan fire where they could burn their masks.
"No masks, no mandates. Our face, our mind," said one of the signs, according to photos and videos posted by Oregon Public Broadcasting reporter Sergio Olmos.

The incident was so disturbing to one doctor that he compared it to child abuse.

"Anyone who has ever run in a race knows you don't walk across the finish line," said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a CNN medical analyst. "You run across the finish line. That's what we have to do now. We've gotten to where we are now where we can legitimately look forward to putting this pandemic away finally because more people than ever have been wearing masks and socially distancing. And now getting vaccinated. And to see this sort of breakdown and the kind of things that have finally gotten us here is disappointing. I see people in the clinic every week with high blood pressure, high cholesterol. When their numbers get better, they ask if they can stop their medications. I say no, their numbers are better because they're on the medication. We're doing better because we're wearing masks. I look at the pictures of the kids wearing masks into that fire, to me, it looks very close to child abuse."

See the full discussion below:
