What I don’t get about the movement to tax soda is that the price of soda is generally artificially low because we subsidize the sweeteners that sodas use. The government’s raising the price of the thing it lowered the price of to begin with, and losing more money in the process administrating both steps.
How much healthier would we be as a country if we moved Iowa out of its first-in-the-nation caucus status? Iowa became the first caucus in 1972, and the farm bill became a hugely influential tool of subsidy policy starting about, oh, 1973. Granted, whatever primary goes first will have a disproportionate impact (all the more reason to put a small group of states first), but it seems like a pretty clear straight line.
