The Justice Department has presented new evidence that members of the paramilitary Oath Keepers stashed weapons at a nearby hotel during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Prosecutors have previously shown private messages between Oath Keepers leaders hinting at a quick reaction force that could respond to an escalation of violence during the riot, but a new court filing suggests that was more than just tough talk, reported Politico.
"We get that QRF hotel address yet?" asked Oath Keeper member Kenneth Harrelson during a Jan. 5 chat.
Cell phone data places Harrelson near a Comfort Inn in Arlington, Virginia, that day, but he didn't appear to return until the morning of Jan. 7, when surveillance footage appears to show him picking up luggage and a bag that looks like a "rifle case," prosecutors said.
The new evidence, which comes in a filing opposing Harrelson's release, shows prosecutors may have evidence to disprove defense claims that Oath Keepers only planned to guard against possible violence by Antifa activists and others who opposed former president Donald Trump.
"Defendant Harrelson's administrative control of an Oath Keepers chat as of just last month – after he purported to 'resign' from the organization and tried to disassociate himself from the actions of national leadership – demonstrates that he is a continued threat to the community," prosecutors argued.
The filing also shows that Oath Keepers turned on one another after security forces regained control of the Capitol after the insurrection.
"Didn't realize I was in an unsecured chat with a bunch of shit bags. And blue falcons," Harrelson said, using military slang for backstabbers.

On Tuesday, The Daily Beast reported that a former Navy SEAL and motivational speaker has admitted to participating in the violent invasion of the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
"Shannon Rusch, a SEAL veteran and author of 'A Warrior's Mind,' was identified and tracked by John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab and Deep State Dogs, a research collective dedicated to identifying those present at the Capitol on Jan. 6," reported Adam Rawnsley and Kelly Weill. "After The Daily Beast shared imagery of Rusch found by Scott-Railton and the research group, Rusch confirmed that he had been present on Capitol grounds on Jan. 6."
"Scott-Railton says he and researchers from Deep State Dogs combed through photographs and videos of the riot posted to social media and were able to identify Rusch marching to the Capitol alongside notable Proud Boys Joe 'Rambo' Biggs and Ethan Nordean, and making their way past police barricades at the Capitol, further onto the grounds and underneath bleachers set up for President Joe Biden's inauguration on the Capitol grounds," said the report. "The identification of Rusch would add to the growing list of military veterans who descended on the Capitol to try and stop the certification of Biden's Electoral College victory."
Military veterans and law enforcement make up a disproportionate number of those caught in the Capitol riot. Another veteran at the riot has been charged with stabbing a Capitol Police officer with a flagpole.

Appearing on "Morning Joe," former House Speaker John M Boehner (R-OH) recalled for the MSNBC hosts the bizarre behavior of former House member Mark Meadows (R-NC) who eventually became Donald Trump's last White House chief of staff.
Boehner, who is out pushing his upcoming book "On The House," was asked about his relationship with various Republican lawmakers during his career and the topic soon turned to Meadows -- and his habit of stabbing Boehner in the back.
"John, you write about Mark Meadows, somebody that I've known, somebody who I have considered a friend in the past, and somebody whose alas, once he gets out of sight, seems unrecognizable," host Joe Scarborough began. "He darts all around. we've seen it time and again, especially during [Donald] Trump's illness and towards the end, his recklessness during the COVID crisis, mocking reporters for wearing masks. You had quite a relationship with him as well and you talk about a time where he got on his knees and started begging you for forgiveness -- tell us about that."
"Well, it was a couple of months after he was elected and sworn in," the former House leader began. "His first day in the Congress in January of 2013 he voted against me to be speaker. I went on to win and a couple of months later, my staff came to me and said, Mark Meadows wants to come in to see you -- sure, I had an open door policy and any member who wanted to see me, I would see them."
"So Meadows comes in and he looks a little nervous and he's sitting on this low couch across from this chair I used to sit in and before i could really say much, he slid off of the couch, onto his knees and put his hands in a prayer position and looked at me and said, 'Mr. Speaker, would you forgive me?" and I said 'for what?' I forgot all about the fact that he had voted against me."
"After the 2014 election, he voted against me again to be speaker and then two months later, wrote me this glowing letter. Listen, he's a nice man, but a bit schizophrenic," he smirked.
