In this post below about right wing nuts and LARPers, there seemed to be a minor issue arising about whether or not bloggers are also dorky, like LARPers. Cheetos eating and mom’s basement were invoked to support this claim. The problem with this argument is that liberal bloggers came up with this image to describe warbloggers, who are of course, major league dorks, particularly the ones who give themselves names that involve military titles. Which isn’t to say that blogging is some hep cat kind of occupation or anything. But bloggers are a diverse group.. In the interest of clarity, I thought I’d do a quick taxonomy of bloggers as I see them.
Nerds. Most liberal political blogs are nerdy. The bloggers have a variety of interests they write about that are by and large grounded in the real world. They’re nerdy because they’re intellectual and obsess over the details, but they take a jack of all trades approach. They opine on a variety of subjects, from health care to elections to whatever is in the news. They probably read a lot in general. In high school, they were on the debate team and got all As. If they need glasses, they wear them because they’re not especially vain. Most of them got smart kids jobs after doing well in college; the liberal blogs have a lot of journalists (of course), but also lawyers and college professors.
Geeks. What makes a blog geeky is the narrowness of its approach, I’d say. Music blogs, food blogs, tech blogs and blogs chronicling every piece of information about certain television shows are geeky. In political blogs, I’d say the single issue blogs are geeky, as are the humor blogs that set out solely to make fun of the opposition. Many geeky bloggers are nerds in general, but their blogs are geeky. They’re niche bloggers.
Dorks. Where dorkiness really stands out from nerdiness or geekiness is the power fantasy aspects. Some dorks, as I noted before, have a healthy approach to this, and know the difference between fantasy and reality. Sadly, the proliferation of dorks in the right wing blogs show no signs of this understanding. War bloggers acted out their power fantasies by supporting a real war; morons like James O’Keefe fantasize about being brave investigators when they’re actually liars and assholes. Glenn Reynolds seems to really think he’ll be a cyborg one day, and let’s not even talk about libertarian fantasies of living on separate islands.
Losers. These are the right wing bloggers who seem to have missed out on life in general, and are just full of rage and are lashing out. Anti-choicers, MRAs, that sort of blogger. Ace of Spades qualifies.
