Well, at least Orly Taitz lost. The Republicans of California haven’t completely lost their minds, and we can take some comfort in this.
In general, though, I find that I’m deeply concerned about the far right nutjob patrol’s gallant and often successful efforts at taking over the Republican party. If you thought the previous Republicans were extremists—and let’s face it, they often were—the teabagger crop is even more so. I posted here about how the new Republican candidate seeking to oust Harry Reid seems to be running on an anti-FDR platform, with a side dose of believing that fluoridation is a communist mind control experiment. Seriously, you’d think that the last 50 years of fluoridation without mind control would have not just calmed this conspiracy theory down, but destroyed it completely, but nope. It seems to be sneaking its way back into the conservative discourse.
And then you have Glenn Beck, whose main job seems to be making Rush Limbaugh look moderate. He’s been promoting a book that was written by a bona fide American Nazi, and when called out on it, refused to apologize. In fact, he doubled down. We’re all familiar with the notion that conservative movement types are masters at projection, and if they accuse their opponent of something, it’s usually because they’re doing it. In this case, Beck’s response to his critics was an incoherent version of “Nuh-uh, you’re the Nazis, even though you weren’t the ones actually promoting the work of Nazis!”
It’s really very simple: If Fox News continues to employ Glenn Beck after this, it will forever after be known as a TV network that employs an apologist and advocate for Nazism.
This was always the worrying thing about the Jonah Goldberg tactic of calling liberals fascist—that it was basically projection, a cover for genuine fascist tendencies on the part of the accusers. Now it seems that Beck is committed to veering between calling his critics fascists and promoting the ideas of actual fascists.
I see no good from this. Even if the public freaks out about this ugly turn in the conservative movement and refuses to reward Republicans at the polls, then all that’s happened is a slot has opened up for a party that represents corporate conservatism that is cold-hearted but not completely off the rails. And the Democrats are already trying to get that slot, so this will make it an inevitability. And liberals will have no real party to speak of.
And worse could happen. These assholes could start winning and start taking this country down a very dark road indeed.
