Matthews: Birthers trying to ‘assassinate’ Obama with lies
MSNBC host Chris Matthews found himself incredulous Wednesday of a new poll that reports just how many Republicans think President Barack Obama is not an American citizen.
Faced with this evidence, Matthews accused birthers of trying to “assassinate” Obama’s character with lies.
A CNN/Opinion Research poll released Wednesday found that 42 percent of Republicans said that Obama was “definitely” or “probably” not born in the US.
Forty-two percent of those questioned say they have absolutely no doubts that the president was born in the U.S., while 29-percent say he “probably” was.
“Not surprisingly, there are big partisan differences, although a majority of Republicans thinks Obama was definitely or probably born here,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Eighty-five percent of Democrats say that Obama was definitely or probably born in the US, compared to 68 percent of independents and 57 percent of Republicans. Twenty-seven percent of Republicans say he was probably not born here, and another 14 percent of Republicans say he was definitely not born in the US”
It could be worse. Orly Taitz could be popping out of a cake to croon “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.”
“It’s surely not what the leader of the free world wants for his birthday,” CNN’s Political Ticker notes. “But, for a stubborn group of Americans, conspiracy theories about President Obama’s birthplace are the gifts that keep on giving.”
“Well, this will strike many listening to me now as crazy,” said Matthews in his “Let Me Finish” segment.
“Is it aimed to disabling his administration politically? And are the people who are doing this perpetrating it, pushing it day after day by false statements, innuendo and professed doubts, in fact, the worst kind of citizen?” he wondered.
“Are they, no matter how much they claim to be patriotic, really the most un-American of people because they really do want to destroy this president, not because of what he does but because of who he is? Not because of where he was born, but because what his race was when he was born?”
“Or this the big lie they dare not to admit? They know full well he’s an American. That they’re simply out to destroy him personally. Yes, assassinate him with their lies,” Matthews concluded.
