Judge: Share John Edwards’ sex tape, and I’ll send you to jail
Share the sex tape, go to jail.
That’s the message from North Carolina Superior Court Judge Carl Fox to the attorneys of Andrew and Cheri Young and Rielle Hunter, who are in court over a sex tape obtained by Andrew Young, a former campaign staffer for onetime Sen. John Edwards (D-NC). Young obtained a sex tape of Edwards with his then-mistress Rielle Hunter, and Hunter is suing the Youngs for a breach of her personal privacy.
Edwards, the former Democratic nominee for vice president and erstwhile presidential candidate, is not a litigant in the suit. The Durham Herald-Sun reports:
The attorneys for the Youngs and Hunter, as well as an attorney representing John Edwards, appeared in court Thursday morning to argue over the confidentiality of information that the Youngs, Hunter and Edwards gave during pre-trial depositions. None of the parties involved in the case appeared during the hearing.
Fox said he would issue an order that states the attorneys must maintain the video and transcripts from the depositions at their offices, and must not give a copy of them to their clients.
Hunter and Edwards fear that information they give during their depositions might be sold or given to the media or be used to obtain additional information for another book or movie about their extra-marital afffair as Edwards was campaigning to become the Democrat candidate for president of the United States. They both requested protective orders for their depositions.
“If it should come to this court’s attention that it’s being exploited for any reason in the media, I won’t hesitate to use the court’s contempt authority. Money is not a punishment here, so we would be talking about time,” Judge Fox said, according to another local paper. “This is not grist for the media mill.”
“I’m not in favor of gag orders,” Fox added. But “they talk about it at their peril. What they say could come back to haunt them.”
“Once this is out, it’s out. There’s not a whole lot for me to do,” Fox said. “The next thing I know, someone’s sitting on the television in front of Barbara Walters or somebody like that.”
