Clashes in Russia’s mostly Muslim Caucasus kill 20
MOSCOW (Reuters) – At least 17 rebels and three law enforcement officers were killed on Monday in Russia’s mainly Muslim North Caucasus region, Russian media reported, citing the National Anti-Terror Committee.
The clashes between insurgents and security forces enforcement took place in Ingushetia, a small province next to Chechnya, the site of two separatist wars since 1994.
The Kremlin is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus region, where rebels want to carve out a separate Islamic state.
