Schumer bashes Boehner for failing to stand up to the tea party
A government shutdown appeared all but certain Wednesday as Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), a key broker in the negotiations, went on NBC’s “Today Show” to drive home a message to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).
“They keep moving the goalposts back and that’s because Speaker Boehner is pulled by the tea party,” Schumer said. “It’s his job as a leader to tell the tea party they can’t have everything their way.”
Any budget proposal will have to clear procedural hurdles in order to come up for a floor vote. In order to avert a government shutdown Friday at midnight, “tonight is really the deadline” to reach an agreement, Schumer said.
