Stephen Colbert lampooned Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R) on The Colbert Report for suggesting that anyone who attends a speech from someone who advocates the violent overthrow of the government should be put in prison.
"I'm not for profiling people on the color of their skin or their religion... but if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, then that's really an offense we should be going after," Paul said on The Sean Hannity Show. "They should be deported or put in prison."
Colbert noted that the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech, not "freedom of listen." He pointed out that Paul's proposal would mean anyone who attended Paul's speeches would be arrested.
