When a huge arms depot exploded earlier this month in Turkmenistan, authorities initially claimed a stockade of fireworks had caused a minor disturbance, and that nobody was killed.
It took an Associated Press analysis of satellite photos to reveal that the site was actually a munitions dump for the former Soviet territory. The government has since cut off the area’s mobile phones and all Internet access, but they were unable to stop video of the stunning blast from surfacing online.
A recent local report put the death toll “as high as 1,382, a third of them children,” but it could not be verified.
