On her show Wednesday night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow questioned why the Republican Party had allowed the tea party movement to wield such great influence over its politics, citing a recent study that found the group was the least liked in America.

Maddow's guest, former White House communications director Nicole Wallace, suggested that the tea party movement represented a symbolic "purification" of conservative politics in America.
