Two children killed by ‘brain-eating’ amoeba
A lethal freshwater amoeba has been blamed for the deaths of two people this summer. The two children were killed by an extremely rare infection of Naegleria fowleri, which can invade and attack the human nervous system if the amoebas enter the human nose. The amoeba is extremely common and thrives in warm waters.
Death typically occurs in less than two weeks after infection.
