Former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska sharply criticized the current state of the Republican Party and the debt ceiling negotiations in an interview with the Financial Times.

"I was very disappointed," he said regarding the debt ceiling debate. "I was very disgusted."

"It was an astounding lack of responsible leadership by many in the Republican Party, and I say that as a Republican. Does anyone not believe what’s happened here the last couple weeks in the market was not a complete, direct result of the lack of confidence that came out of that folly, that embarrassment? And both parties have to take some responsibility."

Hagel added that he had never seen so much "intolerance" in America, and described the Republican Party as "narrow" and "ideological."
