Colbert: Newt’s Greek cruise sheds new light on old scandals
“It’s Wednesday,” said Stephen Colbert on last night’s Colbert Report, meaning it’s “time for another Republican front-runner!” This week’s lucky ducky is former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, once regarded as “political roadkill” after his campaign got off to a rough start. Gingrich’s entire campaign staff walked out en masse after he chose to take an expensive cruise of the Greek islands rather than campaign in Iowa.
Now that he’s ahead in the polls, Newt is trying to re-cast that Greek cruise into some kind of fact-finding mission about the European financial crisis. Colbert looks at footage of life on a “Seabourne” cruise ship and concludes that this could cast Newt’s past mistakes (and they are legion) in a new light.
