The next time you're in pain after a huge holiday meal, eating a few sweats may actually cure your ailing stomach.

According to a new study published this month in The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association, sugery snacks enables the stomach to widen by stimulate the vagus nerve.

The nerve, which controls digestion, speech and breathing, commands the stomach to loosen up and create more space.

"A sweet taste can allow the stomach to hold more," Dr. Arnold Berstad said. "And we can eat a little more without experiencing discomfort."

Berstad, who conducted the study with Dr. Jorgen Valeur, however added that the effects may last “long enough to influence the current meal but maybe not more.”
