‘Daily Show’ team analyzes State of the Union address without audio
On Wednesday night, The Daily Show offered cogent analysis of President Obama’s third State of the Union address — but with a twist.
Host Jon Stewart took a moment to marvel at First Lady Michelle Obama’s “I told you that joke isn’t funny” face after the president’s awful “spilled milk” line, then clutched a teddy bear named “Mr. Puddles” after hearing Mitch Daniels’ and Mitt Romney’s dire, apocalyptic responses to the speech.
Stewart then ran through a clip reel of pundits’ responses to the speech, which were all over the map. Some thought it was the speech of the lifetime, while Britt Hume of Fox News pronounced it “boring.”
To help sort out the confusion, he was joined on stage by correspondents Samantha Bee, Wyatt Cenak, and Al Madrigal for a type of analysis rarely done on television: an analysis without audio.
Madrigal said he watched the speech on a muted TV at the gym, while Cenac watched in an airport terminal, and Bee tuned in from outside a Best Buy display window.
The lack of distracting verbiage allowed the trio of reporters to ponder the really important issues of the evening like, “What the hell is in Joe Biden’s mouth?” and, “What was that monster plant on that lady’s jacket?”
