For a 28-year-old New York man, a shocking bill from his hospital almost left him with an illness much worse than what he’d just recovered from.
According to The New York Daily News, unemployed doorman Alexis Rodriguez received a bill totaling over $44 million from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, even though he’d just been treated for pneumonia.
Rodriguez, who only spent three weeks in the hospital, was in obvious disbelief.
“I almost had an asthma attack,” he told The Daily News.
Searching for an answer as to why he received an eight figure bill, Rodriguez contacted the billing firm PHY Services.
PHY told Rodriguez that a simple “system error” occurred with not only him but others, where the invoice number was mistakenly placed in the “amount due” field.
“We are sending an apology letter to everyone who received it,” a PHY service rep said.
Relieved by the news, Rodriguez was still not pleased with PHY.
“It was a big error,” he said. “I think they should have somebody look over the bills before they send them out.”
