Police were Friday questioning two men over the murder of a man whose burned and decapitated body was found in Stockport.
Firefighters found the body of John Grainger, 32, early Thursday ablaze on a verge in the town centre, opposite the Gala Casino. His head was found nearby.
Post-mortem tests revealed Friday he was shot in the head and sustained a “blunt force” head injury.
Two men, aged 29 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are being held in custody.
They were arrested before the body was discovered on suspicion of possessing shotgun cartridges and were later rearrested.
Superintendent Pete Matthews, of Greater Manchester Police, said the incident had left the local community “in shock” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Our thoughts are with John’s family at this tragic time, as they try to come to terms with the loss of their loved one,” he said.
“We have a team of dedicated detectives who are working hard to establish the exact circumstances surrounding John’s death, so we can provide his family with some much-needed answers.”
The crime scene close to Stockport Magistrates’ Court was cordoned off as forensics officers scoured the area, while police were also speaking to local residents.
