A Mexican immigrant was arrested in South Carolina on Sunday after he was stopped by police because “pair of large fleshy testicles” were hanging from his truck.
According to documents obtained by The Smoking Gun, Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy J.R. Moore was on routine patrol when he spotted Joe Cervantes-Rodriguez’s silver truck “displaying an obscene object from the rear bumper.”
“This object was a pair of large fleshy testicles,” the officer wrote. “This item was flesh colored, anatomically correct, approximately the size of a softball, and in clear view of the public and other motorists.”
Moore advised Cervantes-Rodriguez that he had been stopped due to the “large testicles, and he immediately removed them from the back bumper.”
Cervantes-Rodriguez explained that he had moved from Mexico about six months ago, and arrived in South Carolina after spending time in Texas and Georgia. Because he was not able to produce a valid driver’s license, Cervantes-Rodriguez was arrested and later released after posting $237.50 bond. He was also given a citation “for the Obscene Display from his vehicle.”
So-called “Truck Nuts” are oversized plastic testicles that truck drivers hang from the bumper or trailer hitch of their vehicle. They are believed to have first appeared in the U.S. around 1998. The battle over bumper balls has raged in South Carolina since the town of Edgefield tried to outlaw them in 2009.
Cervantes-Rodriguez became the second motorist to be cited for “Truck Nuts” in South Carolina within the last year.
Virginia Tice, 65, was given a $445 ticket last year in Bonneau because her truck was displaying the anatomically correct ornament. She has requested a jury trial but it has been delayed several times.
“She’s such a sweet lady and she just says ‘I don’t want to pay the fine,'” attorney Scott Bischoff, who is representing Tice for free, told Reuters last year. “We’ll let a jury decide whether this is really criminal behavior. I don’t want to take away from the importance of free speech, but it’s really comical.”
