911 call: Christian music star Randy Travis found naked in middle of rural highway
Audio of a 911 call to the Grayson County, Texas Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday night reveals that Christian music superstar Randy Travis was found by a passing motorist lying naked in the middle of a rural Texas highway after his vehicle struck a barrier and veered off the road.
“Did you almost hit him?” the 911 operator asks in audio of the call, broadcast on Wednesday’s episode of “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I don’t know,” the man replies. “It looked like a deer at first, but as I came by it very human… I wanna say it was a white male. Light brown hair, I’m not for sure. I wanna say he had no shirt on but I don’t know. I wanna stay in the vehicle.”
The operator then asks if Travis was in an area that’s “noticeable.”
“It’s straight on the road, it’s in the middle of the road,” the man says. “Right there before the bridge.” He apparently did not realize the man in the road was Travis.
Emergency personnel who responded to the scene said that they identified the man as Travis, and that he was found stark naked in the middle of a rural highway near his home in Tioga, Texas, roughly 60 miles north of Dallas.
His injuries were minor, including some bruises and minor scrapes, but police said he was combative at the scene. Travis was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, and police said he refused a breathalyzer. The results of a blood test are still pending.
Travis incurred an additional felony charge after police said he threatened to shoot and kill the state troopers who were transporting him to jail. Travis was released the next day after his girlfriend posted a $21,500 bond. It is his second arrest this year related to intoxication.
The longtime country crooner who converted to Christian music over the last decade was divorced by Elizabeth Travis, his longtime wife and manager, in 2010. The two have since become embroiled in an ugly exchange of lawsuits. Travis has since accused Elizabeth of divulging confidential information to harm his career, but court filings give no indication what that information may be.
