Home-brewing advocates have filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking information about President Barack Obama’s beer recipe, according to Government Executive.
“Disclosure of the requested information to me is in the public interest because it is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations or activities of the government and is not primarily in my commercial interest,” the formal request, filed by a user of the social media site Reddit, says.
“Also, if you could send me a copy autographed by the president, you’d be the coolest FOIA officer in the federal government, and who could resist that title?” the letter concludes.
FOIA requires federal agencies to make government documents publicly available upon request, with some exceptions. Obama’s beer recipe isn’t likely to be considered a government document, but the Reddit user who submitted the request is still hopeful the letter will produce results.
“I’m a minor government functionary. You’d be amazed at the things we’ll do for you if you make a bizarre request in a reasonable and slightly humorous way. If I’m amused, I’ll go above and beyond, and you can’t get it if you don’t ask,” the user wrote at the social media site.
Obama served his home-brewed honey ale at two White House parties last year and also keeps it aboard his campaign bus, according to NPR.
“It is superb. It is quite good,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters earlier this month.
