On Wednesday night, the third night of StePhest Colbchella ‘012, Rocktaugustfest, Stephen Colbert’s series of broadcasts from the deck of the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Intrepid, Colbert thanked this year’s batch of summer interns and welcomed five new “fierce” young women as his new crew.
At the beginning of the show, which featured performances by reggae-pop artist Santigold, Colbert welcomed the studio audience to the bridge of the Intrepid, “this exact replica of my studio.” (HINT: It’s his studio.) “It’s really nice,” he said, “Not as nice as the replica I had built at home, but much nicer than the one on my jet.”
Colbert kicked off the show by thanking the year’s summer interns on the show, who helped pull off this week of concerts.
“But folks,” he said, “We’ve got a new batch of interns, and they might be the best ones to date, five bright young women who just returned from some kind of study abroad program in London. They’re very helpful and, you know, speaking of which, I don’t have my pen.”
The camera panned over to an offstage tech, who said, “Can you get this to Stephen?” and handed a ballpoint pen to Olympic gold medalist Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, who the crowd greeted with screams and thunderous applause. Douglas cartwheeled and handed the pen off to her teammate McKayla Maroney, and so on until all of the “Fierce Five” U.S. gymnasts had delivered the pen safely to Colbert.
